The Cowboys Men opened their Premiership campaign with an impressive performance at 1300Smiles Stadium, Townsville defeating the Titans 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.Running towards the northern end, the Cowboys tapped off first and immediately handed possession over to the Titans when a Lachie Pierce pass to Michael Law went to ground. The Titans went straight on the attack with Pete Norman and Corey Russell combining to catch the Cowboys short for Kingston Lamberg to score the opening try of the match. The early lead didn’t last long with the Cowboys, through the experienced Dave Zanette, levelling it up at 1 all when he found his way into the in-goal area to link up with Rockhampton’s Damon Moore in just the second minute of the match.Corey Russell was in the thick of it again down the right side of the Cowboys defence diving underneath the outstretched arm of Jack Hughes to regain control of the scoreboard. The Titans had a chance to stretch it 3-1 moments later, this time down the other side of the field but the Adam Pryde long ball couldn’t quite find rookie Wayne Unuwai and the Cowboys survived. The Titans continued to pressure the right-hand side of the Cowboys defence and went there one too many times with Shaun Francis intercepting a Pete Norman long ball to run the length of the field to take the score back to 2-2 half way through the first half. Francis was back in the action minutes later when a Lachie Pierce long ball off a second phase play found him unmarked for to pick up his second. The Cowboys extended the lead to 4-2 which they took into half time through the combination of Michael Law and Jared Townson with the later scoring the try.The home side picked up where they left off and it was Francis again who was in the thick of it. Moore found the him with a long ball and the winger batted it back inside to an unmarked Jayden Benbow to move the score along to 5-2.Corey Russell, arguably the Titans best on the ground more than matched Damon Moore’s accuracy to find veteran Graeme Clancy on the wing to get the visitors within two. It was another veteran this time from the Cowboys line-up that was to score next with Dan Withers the beneficiary from some quality ball playing from Jared Townson and the hosts were back in control at 6-3.Adam Pryde gave the Titans some hope when he and Russell combined to find some space between the Cowboys middles but the hosts proved to have too much class and strike across the board. Fittingly it was Francis who wrapped it up with his hat trick coming from a Roger Federer like between the legs play from Dave Zanette to take the final score out to 7-4.
