Gorge groups sue to block Hawaiian garbage

first_imgA coalition of environmental groups and the Yakama Indian Nation sued in federal court Wednesday to stop the planned shipment of Hawaiian garbage up the Columbia River for burial in Klickitat County. The lawsuit cites concerns over invasive plants and animals that could be contained in the garbage, and alleges the plan has undergone inadequate environmental analysis.A private operator, Hawaiian Waste Systems, received final approval earlier this week to begin shipping large bales of shrink-wrapped garbage from Honolulu to be buried at the Roosevelt Regional Landfill in Klickitat County, which already receives imported garbage from mainland cities. The garbage would be shipped to the Port of Longview, where it would be off-loaded and shipped by rail through Clark County to the landfill. The plaintiffs submitted photos of ripped bales of garbage in a news release announcing the suit. The operator says the bales would be rewrapped for shipping and buried promptly upon receipt at the landfill.last_img
