by The Associated Press Posted Sep 3, 2014 8:01 pm MDT NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg is returning to lead the financial data and news company he founded in 1981 but left to serve three terms in City Hall. The company, Bloomberg LP, said Wednesday that current CEO Daniel Doctoroff will step down at the end of the year.Doctoroff was a deputy mayor under Bloomberg. His departure makes way for Bloomberg to take back the helm of the company, of which he still owns more than 85 per cent. The 72-year-old Bloomberg handed the reins of America’s largest city to Bill de Blasio on Jan. 1.In a statement, Bloomberg said he never intended to return to his company after 12 years as mayor. But after reacquainting with its operations, he said, he could not resist its lure.“I have gotten very involved in the company again and that led to Dan coming to me recently to say he thought it would be best for him to turn the leadership of the company back to me,” said Bloomberg, whose company has grown to employ more than 15,000 people in 73 countries and has made him a billionaire.Doctoroff joined Bloomberg LP in 2008 and became CEO in July 2011. Before that he served six years as Bloomberg’s deputy mayor for economic development. He said he had no job lined up but in the short term would focus on his not-for-profit interests.Bloomberg, whose fortune Forbes estimates at $33.2 billion, credited Doctoroff with guiding the company through the financial crisis of 2008 and the deep recession that followed.Bloomberg LP is privately held and is not obliged to divulge financial information, but it said Wednesday that its revenue grew to more than $9 billion this year from $5.4 billion in 2007. Its subscribers have grown to 321,000 from 273,000, it said, while it added more than 500 reporters and editors. New payday loan rules take effect to protect borrowers The province is pointing Albertans with money woes away from payday lenders.New rules intended to protect borrowers went into effect on Monday, which dropped borrowing rates to the lowest in the country, at $15 per $100.Minister of Service Alberta Stephanie McLean says the government is only one part of ending debt cycles.A new cash crunch loan is being introduced at First Calgary Financial on August 22nd. President Shelley Vandenberg says it’s one of many alternative solutions that promises to be fair.“It has an annual interest rate of 19 per cent and a payback period of six to 18 months, which equates to just 73 cents for $100 borrowed. The first of its kind in the province to help southern Albertans with a fair and affordable small loan,” said Vandenberg. “We will be working on a case-by-case basis to find the best solution for members, or individuals coming forward and we have a network of referrals and agencies to support us.”Under the new rules, payday lenders can’t solicit by phone or email, lend to someone who has an outstanding loan or charge a fee to cash a cheque. With the beef industry acting as a major contributor to greenhouse gasses, Brock University researchers are examining what can be done to cut down on the consumption of red meat by Canadians.Brock food scientist Gary Pickering and graduate student Samantha Stea are examining what type of messaging works to encourage people to either lessen their red meat consumption or stop eating it all together. The duo asked 593 red-meat eaters from across Canada why they eat beef, pork, lamb and other red meat, as well as how much they know about the environmental impacts of red meat farming.“Taste and quality are the most important motivators when it comes to consuming red meat,” says Stea, who recently completed a Master of Sustainability degree.Interestingly, the fourth-highest motivation for eating red meat was for health reasons, going against “traditional wisdom” that consuming too much red meat is actually bad for human health, says Pickering, a Professor of Biological Sciences and Psychology, as well as in Brock’s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre.“Concerns around the ethics and morality of eating red meat were very low,” he says.Participants read a list of 13 environmental impacts — including global warming, deforestation, overuse of land, acid rain, soil contamination and others — and ticked off those they thought were associated with red meat consumption.Pickering and Stea then presented the red meat eaters with one of six message types that contained information about the environmental impacts of red meat production. The first type was a simple control: a factual statement of several negative environmental impacts of red meat production such as “The amount of corn and grain needed to feed one cow could feed 10 to 15 people.”The second and third version of the statements contained subtle variations that framed the facts in different ways. For instance, the “Canadian place identity” frame changed the earlier sentence to “In Canada, the amount of corn and grain needed to feed one cow could feed 10 to 15 people.”The “social norm” frame added, “People are making dietary choices to reflect their feelings towards these impacts,” while other messages contained combinations of the place identity and social norm frames. The researchers then asked participants several questions about their intended future red meat consumption.Almost half of the participants said they would reduce their red meat consumption after reading the control statement. The social norm statement also motivated participants to say they intended to eat less red meat. Place identity had no impact on changes in future consumption.Participants also re-read the list of 13 environmental impacts and once again ticked off those they thought were associated with red meat consumption. In all 13 categories, the red meat eaters’ knowledge and awareness of the environmental impacts of red meat farming increased. The researchers say several important lessons can be drawn from their study, “Optimizing Messaging to Reduce Red Meat Consumption,” which was published earlier this year in the journal Environmental Communication, and won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Food and Agriculture Technologies in Bali, Indonesia last year.Stea says the results paint a hopeful picture of what can be done to protect the environment.“It can be easy and simple to incorporate eco-friendly ideals and choices into our day-to-day lives,” she says. For example, by thinking about how we can make slight adjustments to our diet, like eating red meat less often, we can help reduce the environmental impacts created by the red meat industry. Many studies have outlined the severe environmental impacts of red meat farming that contribute to climate change, such as significant methane emissions, the global warming impact of nitrogen in fertilizers and manure, deforestation for pasture, and the huge water requirements used in farming.
NORFOLK, Va. — B.J. Stith scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Old Dominion past VCU 62-52 on Wednesday night.Stith was just 5 of 19 from the field but made all eight of his free throws for the Monarchs (4-3). Ahmad Caver added 13 points with five rebounds and four assists and Xavier Green had nine points and six rebounds.VCU jumped to a 15-4 start and stretched the lead to 32-15 with 2:37 to play in the half before a Stith 3-pointer and a Jason Wade layup cut it to 32-20 at the break.Green opened the second half with a 3 and a jumper back-to-back to ignite a 14-7 surge that cut VCU’s lead to 41-34 with 13:39 to go. Stith drained two consecutive 3-pointers to put Old Dominion on top 47-46 with 8:40 left and the Monarchs never trailed after that.Marcus Evans scored 14 points to lead the Rams (5-2).The Associated Press
Under-35s listen to twice as many podcasts as over-45s and six million Britons listen to podcasts every week, up by a third in 12 months.Concern over the BBC’s struggles to reach young people in a shifting media landscape where untrustworthy sources have gained ground have prompted Ofcom to launch a review of its news output. The regulator said: “The growing use of online news, by young people in particular, and questions about the trustworthiness of some online news sources, heighten the importance of the BBC’s role as a trusted provider of news and current affairs.”It is understood that the review will consider widespread criticism of some of the BBC’s online news output. In the last year the corporation has come under attack for publishing “clickbait” articles in its pursuit of larger younger audiences, such as “YouTubers Jacksepticye and Wiishu confirm ’emotional’ split” and “Search is on for Timmy Mallett’s bike”. BBC radio chief James Purnell said: “Fake news spreads like a virus across social media and the trust audiences have in radio is a potent weapons against it. Audiences increasingly want to listen on demand so we’re improving our offer to them.”Live radio accounts for just 31 percent of audio consumption among 15 to 24-year-olds, compared with 71 per cent for the general population. The Today programme is poised to launch a daily podcast aimed at younger listeners, in the wake of criticism from Ofcom that the BBC is too focused on older audiences. The first episode of Beyond Today will be available on Monday. It has a separate young production and presenting team dominated by women and with as many people from ethnic minorities as men.Beyond Today, due for promotion via the new BBC Sounds smartphone app, will focus on one major story each day, beginning with a preview of the Budget. It will enter a crowded field of current affairs podcasts and aims to help tackle declining audiences for the BBC flagship radio news programme.–– ADVERTISEMENT ––Official figures published last week showed that Today’s average weekly audience has fallen to 6.7 million, down by 600,000 in two years and by more than a million on the same period in 2017, when the snap general election and the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire boosted listening.Ofcom said last week that the BBC “needs to do more, more quickly, to reach young people, who are critical for its future success”.Younger audiences for both television and radio are increasingly turning to on-demand programming rather than traditional broadcasts. Updated at 11.10pmA TEAM FROM Mallow Search & Rescue recovered the body of missing student Steven Kavanagh from the River Shannon this afternoon. The 21-year-old, who was vice president of LIT Student’s Union, had been missing for almost three weeks. It’s understood his body was recovered at Ardnacrusha power station shortly before 1pm.The Union of Students in Ireland has said it’s “saddened” by the news his death.According to a statement:Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult and challenging time.Steven was one of the most genuine and honest people to have been involved in USI for many years. His dedication and commitment to the student cause both on a national level and working on behalf of the students in LIT was unparalleled. He is a true inspiration to all of us in the student movement. Steven was last seen in the early hours of Thursday 6 March. He had left Thomond Student Village in Limerick, and was seen getting into a taxi at 1.50am heading towards Clonlara. It is believed that he was seen getting out of the taxi on the Killaloe side of the Clonlara Bridge soon afterwards.A large-scale search has been under way since then. The Limerick Leader reports that more than 100 people took part in a search of the area at the weekend. The USI says it will release removal and funeral arrangements once they’re confirmed. This is obviously an extremely difficult time for those of us who knew Steven, and the many students who assisted in his role in LIT Students’ Union. For anyone who requires support or just someone to talk to, we here at USI are of course available and are happy to talk or just listen. The statement concludes:Talking is a sign of strength. There’s always someone willing to listen- Reach out to others and be there for one another. For online counselling please visit Turn2Me. In the registration process, there is a question about ‘referral pathway’, in this section you can put in ‘USI’, then they can identify you coming via USI.First posted at 9.42pm.Read: “Tremendous loss…”: Politicians North & South pay respects as Edward Haughey laid to restRead: Child abuse support group oppose any sentence reduction for Athlone child rapist
Stay on target ‘God Eater 3’ on Switch Brings Franchise Back to Its RootsHands-On: ‘Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’ Beta Left Us Hung… If you follow me on Twitter or have read my posts about it then you know I am a huge fan of Monster Hunter World. At the time of this writing, I have sunk nearly 260 hours into it. The game is absolutely fantastic. It may even end up as my Game of the Year. This is interesting considering I’ve never been a fan of the franchise. While the concept of hunting down giant monsters has always intrigued me, the controls and graphics of the older Monster Hunter games were always a huge turn-off. I’m extremely happy Capcom finally gave the series the upgrade it deserved. Not only am I now a fan, but millions of others are too.Monster Hunter World released on PS4 and Xbox One earlier this year. It received an excellent PC port earlier this month. Considering how advanced it is, it’s no surprise the game isn’t available on Switch. Nintendo’s console/handheld hybrid does great things, but at the end of the day, it’s still underpowered compared to its rivals. The system is strong enough to handle an old Monster Hunter game though, and that’s precisely what Switch owners are getting in the form of Monster Hunter World Generations Ultimate. As a person who loves Monster Hunter World, playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on Switch hasn’t exactly been easy. In fact, it’s very akin to culture shock. I hoped playing MHW would give me some appreciation for the classic series, but that hasn’t been the case. While I can better understand why some folks enjoy the older Monster Hunter titles, the Switch port has not changed my mind. If you’re a fan of classic Monster Hunter games, then you’re going to love Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on Switch. If you’ve come into the franchise via Monster Hunter World, you’re probably better off waiting for a follow up to the current-gen title. This older Monster Hunter adventure is definitely an acquired taste. Before I go on, I want to let you know that this isn’t a formal review of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. While I am going to detail what’s in the game and what I think of it, this piece is really for Monster Hunter World fans curious about trying out the title. I also want to let folks who are fans of classic Monster Hunter games that my thoughts do not in any way invalidate your experiences. If you love old-school Monster Hunter, nothing I say can take that away. For everyone else, let this serve as a head’s up as to what you can and can’t expect when playing Monster Hunter World Generations Ultimate. The first thing that will surprise Monster Hunter World fans is Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate’s presentation. It is painfully obvious this game originally released on the 3DS. While it’s true the Switch isn’t a graphical powerhouse, it still delivers excellent graphics for a device of its type. Games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are downright gorgeous. The same does not apply for Generations Ultimate. At least, if you plan to play it on a big screen TV.When playing in handheld mode, Generations Ultimate is at least passable. The environments still contain low-resolution textures, but they’re far less offensive to the eyes. Playing in handheld mode made me respect what the developers were going for. Considering this was originally a 3DS game, the worlds contain a good deal of variety and detail. Everything looks authentic in its own way. If you’re going to play this game, then do yourself a favor and play it exclusively in handheld mode.Monster Hunter World does a magnificent job of creating excitement and suspense right at the beginning. The game throws you directly into the the action and doesn’t let up. It teaches players the basics during the middle of elaborate and thrilling set pieces. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate does the complete opposite. After the admittedly awesome CG intro, players arrive in the game’s base camp and have to read through countless screens describing the mechanics. It’s simultaneously overwhelming and mundane. It takes a while before you’re able to go into the wild, but even then you’re not exactly allowed to have fun.The game’s tutorials and intro missions mostly focus on having players gather plants and bugs. This is important stuff to learn, but having them up front like that kills any momentum the game was trying to build up with the CG intro. Each mission is filled with even more text to read through. You can skip them if you want, but it’s best not to consider how different gathering items is compared to MHW. If you want to grasp Generation Ultimate’s fundamentals, you’re just going to have to suffer through a lot of boring tutorials.Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate lacks many of the quality-of-life features found in Monster Hunter World. Things like bug nets, fishing rods, and whetstones eventually break or run out. In MHW, you are free to use these items as many times as you wish. Drinking potions during battles are infinitely more hazardous since your character stands still. You can’t drink and run like in MHW. To make things worse, you do a pose after drinking potions, giving monsters a chance to whoop you. Don’t count on scout flies to find monsters for you either. You’ll have to hope you run into your quarry and then tag it with a paintball. It feels like the game is purposefully trying to frustrate players. But how are the actual monster hunts? I’m happy to say this aspect works as intended. Well, for the most part. Like I said, you have to investigate each zone’s locations until you find your monster. Other than that, things should feel familiar to Monster Hunter World fans. You attack the creature when you have an opening and dodge as much as possible. You then have to chase it down (did you remember to shoot it with a paintball?) when it runs away. After some time, you’ll eventually bring your prey down. While hunting and fighting monsters is a blast, it isn’t nearly as polished an experience as it is in MHW. For obvious reasons, creatures in Generations Ultimate do not have the same amount of animations as the monsters in World. Because of that, it is somewhat hard to tell what type of attacks they’ll do next. All of the beautiful animations creatures have in MHW aren’t just for show, they truly help you out. Despite some clunkiness, I still found hunting the best part of the game, which I suppose is a good thing. One of Monster Hunter World’s most defining features is its vast, open-world maps. Every locale, from the lush Ancient Forest to the volcanic Elder’s Recess is brought to life in stunning detail. It is quite easy to traverse each area’s different zones. The same cannot be said about Generations Ultimate. Whenever one enters a new zone, they have to sit through a loading screen. Granted, the load time is very short, but it still hampers the flow of the hunt. Moving from zone to zone makes one feel as if the entire level is just a patchwork of smaller locations (which it pretty much is). Old-school Monster Hunter fans are used to this, but newer fans will not find this appealing.Based on what I’ve written so far, you may get the impression Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate isn’t worth your time if you’re a fan of Monster Hunter World. This isn’t exactly true. What Generations Ultimate lacks in presentation and quality-of-life features it makes up for with an insane amount of content. The most notable thing here is G-Rank monsters. These beasts are like MHW’s tempered creatures, only more powerful. On top of that, they have different animations and attack patterns. Players need to craft new equipment for hunting and surviving these overwhelming monsters. Specifically, they need to create weapons with “purple” sharpness, i.e., the sharpest weapons in the whole game. In addition to G-Rank monsters, there are many more monsters and different monster types to encounter. I actually wish Monster Hunter World had some of these creatures. There are no giant birds or insects to fight in the current-gen game.Like Monster Hunter World, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate lets players pick from a variety of weapons. The big difference here is the ability to choose different hunting styles and hunting arts. Hunting styles change how you approach combat. Some styles allow you to mount monsters easier, while others give you different movesets. Hunting arts are basically super moves. One’s hunting style determines the number of equipable hunting arts. Like the extra monsters, hunting arts and styles are features I would love to see in Monster Hunter World.Another cool feature is the ability to transfer saves from 3DS to Switch. If you’ve invested hundreds of hours into Monster Hunter Generations on Nintendo’s handheld, then all of your hard work wasn’t in vain. I didn’t get to try this feature myself since I don’t have the game on 3DS, but I appreciate its inclusion. I wish more cross-gen games did this sort of thing. Hell, I wish I could bring my PS4 MHW save data to PC. This is definitely a great bonus for long-time fans. One of the reasons I’ve played Monster Hunter World for so many hours is because of multiplayer. I love how I can jump into someone else’s hunt or have them enter mine via SOS flare. It really gives the game a whole new dimension. Plus, slaying monsters with a group — even complete strangers — is just a whole load of fun. I seriously doubt MHW would be the giant it is now if not for its engrossing online component.Since I received an early copy, I didn’t get a chance to try multiplayer either online or locally. I do understand playing with others isn’t as smooth as it is in Monster Hunter World. You cannot search for SOS flares nor launch any of your own. If you want to play a specific mission, you’ll have to find a lobby with three other players also doing the same mission. Again, I cannot speak for the online aspect at this point. If there’s anything worthy to note after launch, I’ll report on it.Before wrapping this up, I just want to reiterate that I am not trashing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. It is the best version of classic Monster Hunter currently available. The sheer amount of content alone makes it worth the price for long-time fans. However, if you’re a Monster Hunter World fan, this will not satisfy you in the same way. I’m not saying not to try the game out if you get the chance. There’s definitely a benefit in seeing where the series came from. Just realize Generations Ultimate and World are vastly different experiences. There’s absolutely no shame in just sticking with Monster Hunter World and its sequels from now on. For the old guard, you can celebrate the fact the original series is getting one final hoorah with Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate.Monster Hunter: World is Capcom’s fastest selling game. And it has received high marks in both it’s PC version and Switch hands-on. We love this game so much we came up with 11 of our favorite characters we’d love to see dropped into this world. See all our Monster Hunter news here including the best t-shirts from the franchise.

Arktika.1 is a first-person shooter made by the folks behind the highly acclaimed Metro series. You’ll protect a colony in a post-apocalyptic ice age from all sorts of brutes. <><> Closing ThoughtsOverall Oculus had a pretty solid day. The only killer is that for the Rift to match the capabilities of its nearest competitor, the Vive, you’ll need to spend an extra $80. Plus, the fact that the Rift itself already feels a bit cheaper and lacks some of the features of the HTC Vive sets the system back a bit. That said, having used both the Oculus Touch and HTC Vive’s wand-thingies extensively, I can say that I’ve got a strong preference for the former. So if Facebook can bring enough high-quality games and software to the system, then it’s likely the Rift has a bright future. Yesterday, Facebook subsidiary Oculus held their big press conference. We saw everything from new games and features to the price and release date for the long-awaited Oculus Touch controllers. If you’re at all interested in VR and Oculus in particular, check out our rundown on the biggest news.Virtual Conferencing, Parties, and RoomsMark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder, hopes to make VR the next big computing platform. On stage he demo’d a virtual lobby that would allow meetings, games, video chat, and sharing. You’ll be able to change backgrounds and do things like walk around in a digital version of Mars, or the sea floor — surrounded by friends, family, or coworkers. Many of these features also transfer over when you’re using the headset normally, so you can chat and interact with virtual facsimiles of your friends. You can form small groups that Oculus is calling “parties” and carry those over into 3D chat rooms.Oculus Touch and AccessoriesOne of the biggest knocks against the Oculus Rift has been its reliance on an Xbox One controller and the lack of “room scale” VR — which allows you to walk around freely. Most experiences on the Oculus are chair-bound, meaning that they’re mostly stationary. That limits a lot of the power of VR to physically move and interact with virtual objects and spaces. To remedy this, Oculus has been working on their Touch controllers. These are a pair of devices that wrap around your hands and allow you to more naturally interact with VR. They will start shipping December 6 at $199 — meaning that for the base Oculus set and the controllers you’ll have to shell out $798, putting the Oculus in line with the HTC Vive. However, for full room scale VR, you’ll also need an additional Oculus sensor that will retail for $79 and will also ship December 6.Oculus is creating a standalone VR headsetRight now VR mostly comes in two forms: phone-based VR like the Gear and Google Cardboard, and PC-bound VR like the Rift or the Vive (or PSVR to a PlayStation 4). But Oculus wants to produce another set that can work on its own — without any additional hardware. The prototypes are still very early in development, and there’s no name for the system yet. Still, Zuckerberg hopes that it will make VR much more portable and accessible.Blade Runner 2049 and new Disney content are headed to the Oculus RiftBlade Runner 2049, the sequel to the original 1982 classic was announced earlier today. It’s due out next year, but Oculus is already gearing up for a special partnership to bring the film into VR. The operation bandwidth of gate tunable THG ranged from ~ 1300 nm to 1650 nm, covering the most common spectral range for optical fibre telecommunications at 1550 nm. Such a broad operation bandwidth resulted from the energy distribution of the graphene Dirac fermions. The observation is similar to a parallel investigation published in Nature Nanotechnology to electrically control the THG efficiency (THGE) of graphene, likewise attributed to massless Dirac fermions. Overall, the experimentally observed broadband gate-tunable optical nonlinearities of graphene offer a new approach to build electrically tunable nonlinear optical devices in practice. Existing electronic interconnections (copper cables) for instance, suffer bandwidth loss due to performance restrictions, impeding accelerated information processing required for media streaming, cloud computing and the internet of things (IoT). A growing need exists to regulate light and develop compact, cost-effective, high-performance optical interconnects for higher bandwidth and lower loss. Future research efforts are likely to enhance the observed effects using a variety of approaches including waveguide/fibre integration and optical resonators. In addition, various polaritons and photonic metamaterials can provide localized enhancement and manipulation of optical nonlinearities in 2-D materials to create surface plasmons and tackle the foreseen challenges of nonlinear nanophotonics and nanophysics device development, with advanced optical solutions. The knowledge can be extended to other nonlinear optical processes in graphene, including high-order harmonic generation. The existing technology with traditional bulk crystals has hit a technical limit to realize the envisioned optoelectronic applications, due to their relatively small nonlinear optical susceptibility and the complex and expensive, fabrication and integration methods. The demonstrated nonlinear optical interaction enhancement in 2-D materials should ideally be developed alongside large-scale and high-quality 2-D material production, to enable completely different approaches for electrically tunable nanodevice construction. Such nanodevices may facilitate the proposed advances in metrology, sensing, imaging, quantum technology and telecommunications. Graphene, the best known 2-D material, derived from 3-D graphite, constitutes a monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a 2-D hexagonal lattice, exhibiting strong ultra-wideband light-matter interactions, able to operate at an extremely broad spectral range, suited for next-generation photonics and optoelectronic devices. The unique electronic properties of graphene originate from Dirac cones, features in electronic band structures that host charge carriers of zero effective mass, so-called massless Dirac fermions that occur in 2-D materials. Materials scientists are currently at a stage of experimental infancy to realize many interesting properties of the nonlinear optical responses of graphene, to aid its promise to disrupt existing technology and facilitate wide-ranging applications. Schematic representation of the multiphoton effects in graphene Dirac fermions: the increase of chemical potential |Ef| can successfully switch off one-photon (|Ef| > 1/2ħω0), two-photon (|Ef| > ħω0), and three-photon (|Ef | > 3/2ħω0) interband transitions by Pauli blocking. Two-photon interband transitions contribute to third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility [χ(3)] positively, while one- and three- photon interband transitions contribute negatively. Red arrows indicate the input photons at ω0 frequency and the blue arrows indicate the generated third-harmonic photons at 3ω0 frequency. ħ, reduced Planck constant. Schematic for gate tuning the chemical potential: the ion-gel gating method was adopted in the study using the field-effect transistor structure with graphene (2D hexagonal lattice) supported by fused silica. The device structure measured the linear and nonlinear optical responses of graphene at room temperature and monitored the chemical potential (Ef) versus the gate voltage (Vg) in situ. Credit: Nature Photonics, doi: 10.1038/s41566-018-0175-7 , Optics Express © 2018 Phys.org , Science The birth of nonlinear optics is credited to an experiment conducted in 1961 by Peter Franken and co-workers with a pulsed ruby laser, in which they observed the nonlinear effect of second-harmonic generation (SHG, frequency doubling) for the first time. Dynamic control of optical nonlinearities remains confined to research laboratories as a spectroscopic tool at present. Now writing in Nature Photonics, Tao Jiang et al. report that nonlinear third-harmonic generation (THG, frequency tripling) can be widely tuned in graphene using an electric gate voltage. This has many potential applications—gate-tunable, nonlinear optical mechanisms of graphene and other 2-D graphene-like materials are desirable to engineer future on-chip photonic and optoelectronic applications with extremely high speed and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility for device fabrication. Electrically tunable second-harmonic generation was previously reported in other 2-D materials, such as Tungsten diselenide (WSe2) with excitons, although the spectral bandwidth was limited. Experimentally, tuning the input frequencies or the chemical potential (Ef) of graphene can provide detailed information about the third-order nonlinear optical response, thus far suggested in theory.Third-order nonlinear processes are also known as four-wave mixing, as they mix three fields to produce a fourth. The latest results from Jiang et al. originate from the ability to adjust the chemical potential (Ef) of graphene and electrically switch on or off single photon and multiphoton resonant transitions with ion-gel gating (also known as gate-controlled doping), for a given set of input frequencies. The experimental results matched well with theoretical calculations to provide a firm basis to comprehend third-order nonlinear optical processes in graphene and graphene-like Dirac materials.
