TORONTO — The Toronto stock market charged ahead Wednesday as oil prices stabilized following a series of jolts and traders digested positive earnings reports. The S&P/TSX composite index gained 158.42 points to 14,548.85.A sharp rise in oil prices helped the Canadian dollar erase early losses that took the currency to a fresh five-year low. The loonie moved up 0.1 of a cent to 87.74 cents US as the U.S. dollar made strong advances against other currencies in the wake of election results that saw the Republicans retain control of the House and gain a majority in the Senate.U.S. indexes were also positive as the Dow Jones industrials climbed 68.91 points to 17,452.75, the S&P 500 index added 6.93 points to trade for 2,019.03 while the Nasdaq added 3.74 points to reach 4,627.38. Oil prices jumped $1.92 to US$79.11 a barrel a day after West Texas Intermediate on the New York Mercantile Exchange tumbled to a three-year low in response to plans by Saudi Arabia to cut oil prices to its U.S. customers.Saudi Arabia made the cut in order to compete with a surge in oil production in the United States.“In their minds, they think why should they cut back production and let the U.S. continue full steam ahead?”, said Allan Small, senior adviser at HollisWealth.“So the Saudis are saying, we can work with a lower price per barrel and they don’t think that others can and they’re hoping they can price some people out of the market. Their costs are a lot lower.”Crude prices got extra support after the Energy Information Administration reported U.S. crude supplies rose by a smaller-than-expected 500,000 barrels last week, far less than the 1.2 million-barrel rise that had been forecast. The move by Saudi Arabia on Tuesday sparked a selloff of TSX energy stocks with the sector dropping more than four per cent. But by late Wednesday morning, the sector had made good that loss. The consumer discretionary sector was ahead two per cent as auto parts maker Magna International Inc. said Wednesday its third-quarter profit grew to US$470 million or $2.19 a share. That’s up from $319 million or $1.39 per diluted share a year ago. Sales increased to $8.82 billion, up from $8.34 billion a year ago. Magna shares gained $5.86 or 5.3 per cent to $116.46.The base metals sector turned positive, up one per cent while the December copper contract shed one cent to US$3.01 a pound. The stronger greenback weighed on other commodities priced in U.S. dollars, particularly gold as the December contract in New York fell $20.80 to US$1,146.90 an ounce. The gold sector was down just 0.15 per cent.Elsewhere on the corporate front, shares of pipeline company Enbridge Inc. slipped nine cents to C$52.15 after it posted adjusted earnings of $345 million or 41 cents per share, up from $278 million or 34 cents per share a year ago.And shares in coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons Inc. were ahead 55 cents to $92.39 as the company earned $98.1 million or 74 cents per share in its latest quarter, down from $113.9 million or 75 cents per share a year ago. Total revenue amounted to $909.2 million, up from $825.4 million. The company is in the midst of being taken over by American fast food giant Burger King.
In a statement issued by his Deputy Spokesperson in New York, the Secretary-General expressed his concern over “persisting restrictions of civil liberties and democratic rights in the run-up to the 30 July constitutional referendum in the Comoros.”Monday’s vote on key constitutional changes proposed by President Azali Assoumani, who took office two years ago limited to a single-term, has been criticized by political opponents as an effort primarily to run again next year or beyond, according to news reports.Under the current constitution, power rotates every five years between the three main islands of the Comoros, as a means of balancing power after years of instability. Reports say that three vice-presidencies would be scrapped if the referendum passes, consolidating presidential authority further. In June this year, the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, which has been helping to stabilize the electoral process in the Comoros, called for “the broadest possible consensus” on institutional changes across the Archipelago. On Sunday, the UN chief urged the Government of the Comoros “political parties and all other relevant stakeholders to do their utmost to respect the rule of law and human rights” and said he was “echoing the recent decision of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government” with is call on “Comorian stakeholders to engage in a dialogue to ensure an inclusive consultation on constitutional reforms under the auspices of the African Union.”

Passing out on purpose. Surfing on the roof of a moving car. Playing ‘chicken’ with an oncoming train.Recent headlines of teen stunts gone wrong have many scratching their heads wondering, “What were they thinking?”Assistant Professor of Psychology Elizabeth Shulman is studying what happens in the minds of teenagers when they consider engaging in risky behaviour — and she will continue that work with the help of funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).Shulman is one of almost two dozen Brock researchers receiving a total $3.8 million in funding under NSERC’s 2017 competition for the Discovery research programs — more than $1.4 million over last year’s results. News of Brock’s NSERC funding was delivered by Niagara Centre Member of Parliament Vance Badawey, who made the announcement Friday, Sept. 8 in the University’s Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex.Niagara Centre Member of Parliament Vance Badawey congratulates Brock University assistant professor of psychology Karen Campbell on being part of a $3.8 million Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada funding announcement for Brock researchers Friday, Sept. 8.A national announcement, with results of the 2017 Discovery programs, scholarships and fellowships competitions for universities across the country, was simultaneously made in B.C. by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science.“This announcement, once again, affirms our government’s commitment to scientific research and the understanding of its importance in our society,” Badawey says. “Niagara is, year by year, continuing to establish itself as a centre of ground-breaking research and by providing much needed resources, we are enabling our brightest minds to meet challenges both today and into the future.”The funds will support Shulman in conducting a wide range of physical and psychological tests to explore how adolescents’ decision-making about risk differs when it is based on intuition rather than careful deliberation. She plans to use funds to purchase specialized equipment to measure bodily responses to risk, create computerized risk-taking tasks, and compensate research participants for their time. “This research is important for understanding the most effective ways to keep adolescents safe — when they are a little bit more vulnerable to risk-taking — without going overboard or keeping them from having experiences that will allow them to learn,” she says.Current research points to teens’ higher sensitivity to rewards as being a key motivator for risky behaviour. However, many studies use unrealistic decision-making tasks that encourage one to thoughtfully weigh the pros and cons of a particular action or respond to heightened emotions, or both, Shulman says.“In real life, we don’t actually make that many decisions that way,” she explains. “We tend to just go with our gut. I think adolescents’ increased levels of risk-taking is probably the result of decision-making that’s based on their gut, their intuition, but not a lot of research has focused on intuitive decision-making.”Brock’s funding includes Discovery Grants, Discovery Development Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements and the Northern Research Supplement, as well as master’s and doctoral student awards.Brock University President Gervan Fearon, centre, addresses the crowd during a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada funding announcement for Brock researchers Friday, Sept. 8. Fearon is joined by Assistant Professor of Psychology Karen Campbell, left, and Niagara Centre Member of Parliament Vance Badawey.“In my 28 years at Brock, this is the best round that I can remember for funding success through the NSERC Discovery Programs,” says Interim Vice-President, Research, Joffre Mercier. “I am very proud of our faculty members, and I congratulate them for the outstanding work.” The success rate for renewing NSERC grants is 80 per cent.“The Government of Canada is committed to investing in fundamental research and engineering that will improve and enrich our country’s knowledge economy,” says the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science. “We believe in encouraging scientists’ cutting-edge ideas that will lead Canada to greater social and economic growth. I am particularly proud of the support offered to postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who, thanks to today’s investment, will be exposed to advanced training experiences that will prepare them for the jobs and opportunities of tomorrow.”NSERC awarded Michael Pisaric and Georgii Nikanov with Discovery Accelerator Supplements, grants that researcher don’t apply for but rather are chosen for by the federal funding agency from the pool of Discovery Grant applicants each year. The Discovery Accelerator Supplement grant is awarded to researchers “who have a superior research program that is highly rated in terms of originality and innovation, and who show strong potential to become international leaders within their field,” says the NSERC site.Pisaric also received a Northern Research Supplement, which provides funding for additional logistical costs to NSERC-funded researchers who conduct research in the Canadian North. Not included in the total is a $149,428 Research Tools and Instruments grant that chemists Melanie Pilkington, Charis Stamatatos and Art van der Est received for the purchase of specialized equipment.Brock University’s recipients of NSERC Discovery Grants in the 2017 competition:Ahmed, S. Rio Tinto is testing new techniques for underground drifting, mineral exploration and improved recovery of ore in its latest push to develop competitive advantage through its Mine of the FutureTM program. Launched in 2008, the program, covered extensively in articles in International Mining, introduces next-generation technologies for mining operations to reduce costs, increase efficiency and improve health, safety and environmental performance. Rio Tinto, and partners Aker Wirth, Atlas Copco and Herrenknecht, is in advanced stages of developing new shaft and tunnel boring systems aimed at significantly reducing the time taken to excavate underground. The tunnel boring system will be trialled next year at the Northparkes copper and gold mine in New South Wales with shaft boring system trials to follow.Rio Tinto believes these rapid mine construction developments through the tunnel and shaft boring systems could lead to a reduction of up to 40% in the time taken to construct an underground mine. Rio Tinto is working on ways of improving rates of ore recovery from mature and complex deposits. Pilot projects are underway in both iron ore and copper, aiming to upgrade marginal ore, reclaim ore from waste streams and improve efficiency through lower energy consumption. An airborne gravity gradiometer is being tested as a potential tool for finding the next tier one orebody. The device can be deployed in an aeroplane to detect small changes in the gravitational forces which result in density differences in the earth that indicate potential mineral deposits. The gradiometer represents a step change in exploration geophysics and will fill a gap in airborne mineral exploration methods, providing us with specific satellite mapping to help us find the possible deposits of the future.Rio Tinto head of innovation John McGagh said “The revolutionary technologies being tested now cement Rio Tinto’s leading position in the field of mining innovation. Mine of the Future is giving us competitive edge in the global mining landscape by generating more efficient and cost-competitive methods of finding, extracting and processing mineral resources and providing new, engaging and diverse employment opportunities.”Recent milestones in the program include the one-year anniversary of servicing the Pilbara from the Operations Centre in Perth, Western Australia; and trialling and initial roll-out of automated haulage and drilling systems. The programme is run in conjunction with leading universities and organisations in Australia and overseas.Rio Tinto’s Pilbara iron ore mining and infrastructure has been controlled remotely for the past 12 months from the Operations Centre in Perth. The Centre has more than 400 employees overseeing and ensuring the synchronisation of the mine, rail and port systems in the Pilbara region. The benefits of the Operations Centre can already be quantified with increased efficiency, improved safety, decreased variability and better identification of performance issues across the iron ore business in Western Australia. Rio Tinto plans to double its fleet of driverless Komatsu haul trucks at its iron ore operations in Western Australia following a successful two-year trial at the West Angelas mine. The broader operational deployment of the autonomous trucks marks a step forward in the development of the Mine of the Future vision, delivering improved safety and production efficiency in haulage.Rio Tinto is also trialling autonomous production drills designed to provide a reliable and repeatable process in blasthole drilling. The intent of the integrated system is that automated blasthole drill rigs will precisely position the blast holes, conduct live rock analysis, dictate to the explosives delivery vehicle the correct charge for each hole and provide data supporting three dimensional mapping systems to provide detailed imaging of each deposit. A number of critical system components have already been successfully tested in Rio Tinto operations.
Whatever your opinion of the iPhone 4, there is no denying that it has a pretty decent camera for taking videos (and images for that matter). The only problem that arises is when taking stills. With all the best will in the world it is quite difficult to take non-jerky videos or blur-free photos when you are on the move, and if you are required to take close ups or point to objects at the same time, you will ideally need both hands free.AdChoices广告Like most cameras, the number one choice to solve the problem is to get hold of a tri-pod of some sort, but as you can imagine a smartphone is a little more awkward to accommodate. There are universal solutions available such as the Gorillapod, but wouldn’t it be great if your iPhone4 had a tripod attachment that fitted directly to the casing? In steps the XShot iPhone 4 Case which seems like a really cool product to address these issues as it comes with a detachable tripod adapter that clips seamlessly into the casing. Macau GGR tumbles 8.6% in August RelatedPosts Load More Gaming operations at all Macau casinos were suspended for the first time in the SAR’s history on Saturday night ahead of the anticipated arrival of Typhoon Mangkhut. The Macau government issued a press release shortly after 11pm stating that gaming floors in all 42 casinos had been shut down on the order of Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On, with the city’s six concessionaires having agreed to the historic move. Described as a “super typhoon” and stronger than Typhoon Hato, which killed 10 people and caused an estimated MP$11.5 billion worth of damage when it struck Macau in August 2017, Mangkhut saw authorities hoist Signal 8 typhoon warning at 2am on Sunday morning. In a statement, the government said that “the suspension of gaming operations is for the safety of casino employees, visitors to the city and residents.“The Civil Protection Operations Centre will – after reviewing community conditions once Typhoon Mangkhut has passed – make a recommendation as to when gaming operations might resume.”It added that casinos were urged to provide all necessary assistance to employees and visitors as stated in an emergency plan sent to all concessionaires by Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau last week.Typhoon Mangkhut had earlier struck the northern areas of the Philippines, with wind speeds of more than 200km/h recorded. New Delhi: The Supreme Court will pronounce its order on September 5 on the anticipatory bail plea of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in a case being probed by ED in INX Media scam and directed that documents linked to the case be submitted under an authenticated sealed cover. Chidambaram’s CBI custodial remand is ending on Aug 30. When the court also ordered that his petition against CBI’s remand be heard on Monday, his lawyers contended that this too should be extended till Monday, but the court refrained from making any comment. Also Read – Shah urges women to shun plastic bags Advertise With Us Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that such a submission should be made before the CBI judge on Friday when Chidambaram’s CBI remand will end and he will be produced before the court. However, the court refused to comment on this and extended Chidambaram’s protection from arrest by ED in INX Media case till September 5. In yet another twist at the fag-end of the hearing, the court directed the ED to submit its documents connected with the case in a sealed cover and asked the probe agency to ensure the seal is authenticated. Also Read – Free bus travel for women gets Cabinet nod Advertise With Us The agency will have to submit these documents in a day. Chidambaram’s lawyers insisted that ED produce the transcripts of his questioning held on December 19, 2018, and January 1 & 21, 2019. Mehta contested, stating that investigations have moved beyond the time-period concerned, and in fact, the case is an advanced stage at the moment. The court then directed the ED to submit documents in an authorised seal cover. Mehta had consistently maintained that documents connected to the case can be submitted to the court instead of the accused, as it would jeopardize the investigations. Advertise With Us Chidambaram’s lawyers referred to it as an unfair process, which denies their client a fair opportunity to defend himself. Earlier in the day, Mehta told the court that Chidambaram’s plea to see the evidence before it is placed before the court will adversely affect several cases involving economic offenders and terror funding. He contended that if the court accepts Chidambaram’s plea, then it is bound to adversely affect other cases, including those of Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi, Nirav Modi, Shardha chit fund, terror funding and others. “Chidambaram’s submission to confront him with the evidence before the same is placed before the court is preposterous. It will lead to exposing evidence and witnesses in similar cases at an investigation stage,” Mehta submitted before the court. He further argued that at the pre-complaint stage the prosecution is entitled to oppose bail based on material in its possession, and whether the accused’s reply to its queries was evasive or not, is a decision within the ambit of the probe agency. Mehta said if the evidence was shown to the accused, then he will immediately erase the details of the money trail. He referred to Chidambaram as an individual having resources and knowledge on the issues. Maintaining the secrecy of the material in possession of the agency is vital; Mehta said, adding it is best to confront the accused with evidence when he is in custody. Arguing on the jurisdiction of the top court, Mehta said the court cannot be created as a regular court entertaining the appeal of the orders of the high courts, lower courts, and magistrates. “Supreme Court is meant to lay down the law,” stated Mehta. Mehta also justified the High Court’s observation that the allegations against Chidambaram are grave. “The quantum of punishment is no measurement of gravity of the offence. What is relevant is the impact of the offence on society and the nation… Offences against the economy of the country… Economic offences are the gravest of offences,” contended Mehta. Mehta dismissed Chidambaram’s lawyers’ argument that the alleged transaction took place in 2007-08 and that PMLA provisions, under which he is charged, were introduced in 2009. He informed the court that the offence has continued to date, and the money acquired, following these corrupt transactions, eventually helped Chidambaram acquire property and further launder. On the retrospective effect of PMLA, Mehta argued that Section 8 of PMLA, 2002 was in the statute at the very inception. Therefore, there is no retrospective imposition of charges on Chidambaram. He told the court under specific sections of the Act that it is clearly held that those who assist or play an active role in shielding the laundered money technically are also guilty of money laundering.
Nickelodeon unveiled its Entertainment Lab a little over a year ago. Under the helm of Young, the Lab has been developing VR titles like “Slime Zone” and 360-degree videos to support shows like “The Loud House.” However, Young and his team have also explored how Nickelodeon could ultimately change the way it produces animation across the board. This included transforming Young’s office on the network’s studio lot in Burbank, Calif. into a motion capture studio to experiment with real-time animation, as well as using Midi controllers to produce animated live shows for Facebook streams on the fly.At the center of these efforts has been the idea of moving production to real-time technologies like game engines, Young told Variety during a behind-the-scenes tour of the Lab a few months ago. “The future is real-time,” he said at the time. “Working real-time is fundamental to this technology.”One of the advantages of using a game engine to produce animation: The results can be rendered across different media with few changes. For a proof-of-concept short film, the Lab team first produced a regular 2D short film. Then, it took the same assets and brought them to VR. “And then we took the VR experience, and put it onto HoloLens,” explained Young a few months ago.Nickelodeon hasn’t said yet which game engine it is using for “Meet the Voxels,” but the studio has in the past relied on Epic’s Unreal engine for some of its VR projects. In its announcement of the show, the network hinted at plans to bring the “Voxels” to AR and VR as well. Nickelodeon is embracing real-time production technologies with a new TV show that is being created with a game engine. “Meet the Voxels,” as the show is working-titled, is based on work done at the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, the network’s R&D unit for AR & VR. It is being developed to air across Nickelodeon’s channels around the world.“Meet the Voxels” is about the life of a family of video game characters, including a Street Fighter Mom, a bubble-popping teenage girl, a 13-year old who is the star of a laser-tag game, a retired arcade game dad and a younger brother in search of a game franchise of his own.The show is being written by Jana Petrosini and Sean Gill, who both have previously worked on “Henry Danger,” “Kid Danger” and “Game Shakers.” It was conceived by Chris Young, SVP of of Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab (pictured above). DuckDuckGo, the browser known for its privacy protection policies, has proposed draft legislation which will require sites to respect the Do Not Track browser setting. Called, the “Do-Not-Track Act of 2019”, this legislation will mandate websites to not track people if they have enabled the DNT signal on their browsers. Per a recent study conducted by DuckDuckGo, a quarter of people have turned on this setting, and most were unaware big sites do not respect it. Do-Not-Track Signal” means a signal sent by a web browser or similar User Agent that conveys a User’s choice regarding online Tracking, reflects a deliberate choice by the user. It complies with the latest Tracking Preference Expression (DNT) specification published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) DuckDuckGo’s act just comes days after Google announced more privacy control to its users. Last week, Google launched a new feature allowing users to delete all or part of the location history and web and app activity data, manually. It has a time limit for how long you want your activity data to be saved: 3 or 18 months, before deleting it automatically. However, it does not have an option to not store history automatically. DuckDuckGo’s proposed ‘Do-Not-Track Act of 2019’ legislation details the following points: No third-party tracking by default. Data brokers would no longer be legally able to use hidden trackers to slurp up your personal information from the sites you visit. And the companies that deploy the most trackers across the web — led by Google, Facebook, and Twitter — would no longer be able to collect and use your browsing history without your permission. No first-party tracking outside what the user expects. For example, if you use Whatsapp, its parent company (Facebook) wouldn’t be able to use your data from Whatsapp in unrelated situations (like for advertising on Instagram, also owned by Facebook). As another example, if you go to a weather site, it could give you the local forecast, but not share or sell your location history. The legislation would have exceptions for debugging, auditing, security, non-commercial research, and journalism. However, each of these exceptions would only apply if a site adopts strict data-minimization practices. These include using the least amount of personal information needed, and anonymizing it when possible. Also, restrictions would only come into play only if a consumer has turned on the Do Not Track setting in their browser settings. In case of violation of the Do-Not-Track Act of 2019, DuckDuckGo proposes an amount no less than $50,000 and no more than $10,000,000 or 2% of an Organization’s annual revenue, whichever is greater, can be charged by the legislators. If the act passes into law, sites would be required to cease certain user tracking methods, which means fewer data available to inform marketing and advertising campaigns. The proposal is still quite far from being turning into law but presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren’s recent proposal to regulate “big tech companies”, may give it a much-needed boost. Twitter users complimented the act. For the full text, download the proposed Do-Not-Track Act of 2019. Credit scores are getting more important as mortgage rates rise and those with a higher credit score will save more, according to LendingTree’s latest Mortgage Offers Report. The report revealed that consumers with the highest credit scores (760-plus) received an average annual percentage rate (APR) of 5.12 percent, versus 5.42 percent for consumers with scores of 680 to 719. The APR spread of 30 basis points between these score ranges remained unchanged from September. “For the average purchase loan amount of $233,938, the spread represents over $15,000 in additional costs for borrowers with lower credit scores over 30 years. The additional costs result from higher interest rates, larger fees or a combination of the two,” the report said.October’s best mortgage offers for borrowers with the best profiles, that are defined by LendingTree as the 95th percentile of borrowers had an average APR of 4.61 percent for conforming 30-year fixed-rate purchase loans, up from 4.39 percent in September. However, for the average borrower, the report found that the purchase APR for conforming 30-year fixed-rate loans was 5.27 percent, up by 18 basis points from September. It revealed that the loan note rate for these borrowers at 5.14 percent was the highest rate of the year.Down payments also declined over September with the average proposed down payment falling by about $3,600 to $60,361.The APR on refinance loan offers also saw an increase of 22 basis points in October to 4.62 percent for borrowers with the best profiles, while the APR for conforming 30-year fixed refinance loans increased by 17 basis points to 5.26 percent. The report found that the spread between credit score brackets of 760-plus and 680 to 719 remained unchanged at 24 basis points, which would result in nearly $13,000 in extra costs over the life of the loan for borrowers with lower credit scores, given an average refinance loan of $238,447.For borrowers shopping around for the best loan rates, LendingTree found that homebuyers could have seen a median lifetime savings of $29,369 in interest on a $300,000 loan by comparison shopping for the best mortgage rates.
