HappySoundsLike UN launches social media campaign to create worlds happiest playlist

That is the question the United Nations is asking as it launches its latest campaign – #HappySoundsLike – an appeal for the global citizenry “to nominate a song that brings a smile to your face” ahead of this year’s International Day of Happiness, observed annually on 20 March. Spearheading the effort, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video contribution urges viewers around the world to ‘Be happy!’ in the UN’s six official languages and join the Organization’s call for people to demonstrate their solidarity with those “facing tough challenges.”“On this day we are using the universal language of music to show solidarity with the millions of people around the world suffering from poverty, human rights abuses, humanitarian crises and the effects of environmental degradation and climate change,” he stated in a news release. The campaign, made possible with the support of global music streaming service MixRadio, seeks to seize the power of music and “inspire hope for a better tomorrow” as it encourages people to suggest songs that best represent the feeling of happiness. Mr. Ban nominated his Messenger of Peace Stevie Wonder’s song “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” to the playlist, adding that to him #happysoundslike a new climate deal and agreed set of sustainable development goals, both on the agenda of world leaders for later this year. Celebrity advocates including Charlize Theron, Lang Lang, Michael Douglas, Angelique Kidjo, along with internationally-acclaimed artists such as James Blunt, Idris Elba, David Guetta, John Legend, Cody Simpson and Pharrell Williams, will also contribute to create the world’s happiest playlist, which will be launched on 20 March.Jyrki Rosenberg, Head of MixRadio, said the music service is privileged to support the UN for this campaign. “We hope the general public follow in the steps of the array of global stars and share the track that makes them happiest.”In April 2012, the UN held a high-level meeting on “Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm” at the initiative of Bhutan, a country which recognized the supremacy of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product (GDP).This year will mark the third observance of the International Day of Happiness, which recognizes the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in people’s lives and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives. read more

At UN Israeli leader calls on Palestinians to resume peace talks deplores

“I am prepared to immediately, immediately, resume direct peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority without any preconditions whatsoever,” he told the UN General Assembly on the fourth day of its 70th annual Debate. “Unfortunately, President Abbas said yesterday that he is not prepared to do this. I hope he changes his mind.”“Because I remain committed to a vision of two states for two peoples, in which a demilitarized Palestinian state recognizes the Jewish State,” he said. “Israel expects the Palestinian Authority to abide by its commitments. The Palestinians should not walk away from peace. President Abbas, I know it’s not easy. “I know it’s hard. But we owe it to our peoples to try, to continue to try, because together, if we actually negotiate and stop negotiating about the negotiation, if we actually sit down and try to resolve this conflict between us, recognize each other, not use a Palestinian state as a stepping stone for another Islamist dictatorship in the Middle East, but something that will live at peace next to the Jewish state, if we actually do that, we can do remarkable things for our peoples.”In his speech yesterday Mr. Abbas cited continual Israeli violations of the 20-year-old accords, including non-stop Israeli settlement of land the Palestinians claim for their hoped-for state, for his decision to no longer feel bound by the political and security agreements. As he has in speeches to the General Assembly over the past three years, Mr. Netanyahu devoted the lion’s share to Iran, this year denouncing the international deal on its nuclear programme, warning that it would the Islamic Republic would use the hundreds of billions of frozen dollars unlocked by the accord to further terrorism around the world. He noted that just in the last six months Iran has boosted its supply of devastating weapons and soldiers to war-torn Syria, shipped tons of arms to Houthi rebels in Yemen, and supplied the Hizbollah group in Lebanon with advanced missiles capable of shooting down Israeli planes, sinking its ships and hit any target in the country.“I repeat: Iran’s been doing all of this, everything that I’ve just described, just in the last six months, when it was trying to convince the world to remove the sanctions. Now just imagine what Iran will do after those sanctions are lifted,” he declared.“Unleashed and un-muzzled, Iran will go on the prowl, devouring more and more prey. In the wake of the nuclear deal, Iran is spending billions of dollars on weapons and satellites.“You think Iran is doing that to advance peace? You think hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions relief and fat contracts will turn this rapacious tiger into a kitten? If you do, you should think again.”Last week, Iranian army commander Major-General Ataollah Salehi proclaimed ‘We will annihilate Israel for sure,’ Mr. Netanyahu added, citing a 400-page book by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that he said details plans to do so.“So here’s my message to the rulers of Iran: Your plan to destroy Israel will fail. Israel will not permit any force on earth to threaten its future,” he declared.“And here’s my message to all the countries represented here: Whatever resolutions you may adopt in this building, whatever decisions you may take in your capitals, Israel will do whatever it must do to defend our State and to defend our people.” read more

Wisconsin Adidas Invitational one of the biggest meets so far for Ohio

The nation’s top cross country teams, including Ohio State’s men’s and women’s teams, will travel to Madison, Wis., Friday to compete in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational. The event will be the last meet for the Buckeyes prior to the Big Ten Championship meet. The women’s team is looking to build on the progress made at their last event, the Notre Dame Invitational, in which they placed 11th. “We’re really excited. Most of the girls ran personal bests last meet,” said women’s coach Khadevis Robinson. “Everything we’ve been doing is going in the right direction. “What we have to find out is if we’re still on a peak, which we were on in our last competition, and figure out how to continue on that peak and get ready for the Big Ten championship.” The men’s squad is attempting to replicate last year’s top-20 finish and also trying to position themselves for the future. In 2011, the Buckeyes finished 17th out of 30 teams. The team will be running two true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen in Madison. “(For) five out of our seven guys, this is their first look at Wisconsin,” said men’s associate coach Brice Allen. “With this young team, we’re trying to gain experience going into the Big Ten Championship,” he said. “We’re (also) trying to be competitive at the national level. That’s why we go to the most competitive race in the country. “ Both men’s and women’s squads will be facing stiff competition as the field is stacked with top tier programs. Twenty-one of the top 30 ranked men’s teams and 20 of the top 30 women’s teams will be competing at the invitational. “This is certainly one of the biggest meets so far,” Allen said. read more

Pride and joy on Fathers Day

first_imgThis coming Sunday Aussie dads will be wading through various DIY manuals for power tools, CDs of old rock albums, series of Soprano or Seinfeld and bad ties. Neos Kosmos English Edition (NKEE) decided to ask four Greek Australian dads to reflect on Father’s Day. John Mangos, senior anchorman with Sky News made it clear that being a father is “the best feeling in the world it is total unconditioned love! I can’t spend enough minutes in the day with him.” Mangos and his wife named their 14 month old son, Konstantino after his pappou. “My wife and I are teaching Konstantino Greek, we are committed to making him aware of his Greek heritage,” said Mr Mangos. This is even more pertinent as they became Greek nationals recently. -“Konstantinos is about to get his Greek nationality” says Mangos. “My parents were Aussie born so was my wife and I want Konstantinos to be proud of his heritage and we want to give him more reasons to feel reason to feel pride and close to roots as we go to Greece annually.” The doting John Mangos points NKEE to Konstantinos’ first steps into media, “Have a look at him… on YouTube, Kosta Zorba he is dancing Zorba with his dog, it’s amazing!” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWt7g2C8vvw) George Kapiniaris, ex-Acropolis Now, recently presented Rockstar, a one man show about being a new dad. George is overjoyed with his 10 month old Petraki, “This will be my first father’s day it’s an amazing experience, you don’t start living until you are a dad.” ” I am on the highest level, its like a video game of life and being a dad is hitting the highest level, “said George – “I used to get up every day at 12 noon, now I bet up at 3am and never sleep late, but I don’t care how tired I get,” added George. Petrakis may be too young to shop but it seems that “an encyclopaedia of guitars” is what George is craving for Father’s Day. The President of the Australian Macedonian Advisory Council Nick Koukouvitakis has just become a dad for the second time, “My wife Roxane just gave birth to a boy, Stelianos and I have Vasiliki who is three and half years old.” Mr Koukouvitakis, when describing what being a dad is like to NKEE said, “It’s a special feeling which one can not explain it’s like unlike any other love.” Mr Koukouvitakis, thinks that every day is a reflection on being a father and is keen to maintain tradition and heritage: “Having a child is a gift and I would like to emulate my parents in the way they raised me.” The treasurer of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne, Victoria, Con Dikeos, has two boys between the age of one and three, Yiorgos and Yianni. He reminds NKEE that he is also a son, and thinking about his late father is an aspect of Fatther’s Day for him. “I think of my late dad on father’s day” Mr Dikeos’ son Yianni was born on the last day of the 40th day of his father’s death. “We kept it a secret and we announced it on the 40 days, in the hall.”Attempting to describe that day, Mr Dikeos said, “It was one of the most bizarre feelings of my life – as the first person I rang to say that my wife gave birth was my dad but life does go on and new generation is born.” Mr Dikeos said he plans to spend this Sunday with his koumbari at church, and then for lunch, as it is the third Sunday after his Yianni’s baptism. A common thread running through these Australian Greek dads have is their love of their children and their love of their own traditions and fathers.

Facebooks AI helps block or remove 1 million accounts each day

first_img Tags Share your voice Politics Tech Industry Post a comment 0 Facebook Facebook is using AI to identify accounts spreading misinformation. James Martin/CNET Facebook is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to block or remove one million accounts a day that violate its rules against misinformation, hate speech and voter suppression ahead of elections in India.Ajit Mohan, Facebook’s India managing director and vice president, outlined the social network’s efforts to combat election interference in a blog post on Monday. The social network has faced criticism for not doing enough to curb abuses on its platform during the 2016 US presidential election when Russian trolls used Facebook to sow discord. Facebook-owned WhatsApp, a messaging app that is popular in India, has also been used to spread misinformation during elections in other countries such as Brazil. While it’s unclear how well Facebook’s election integrity efforts are working, the company is trying to show the public and lawmakers it’s doing more to tackle abuse on its platform.Advances in AI has helped the world’s largest social network “identify abusive or violating content, quickly locate it across the platform and remove it in bulk,” Mohan said. That helps stop the offensive content from going viral. Facebook started planning for elections in India, which begins on April 11, more than 18 months ago. The company requires advertisers who run political ads in India to verify their identity and location. Information about who paid for an ad and the audience it reached is available in a public database. This week, this company is also opening up centers focused on election integrity in Singapore and Dublin and expanded its partnership with third-party fact checkers to combat fake news. The company also recently launched tools in India to help voters learn about new candidates and share with their friends that they voted.Last week, Facebook said it pulled down more than 680 accounts in India and Pakistan for “inauthentic behavior,” which means the people behind the accounts misled users about their identities and intentions. last_img read more

White House official wants to delay Huawei ban report says

first_img 2 4:59 Now playing: Watch this: Computers In May, Trump issued a national security order banning Huawei from the US. Google, Facebook and other US tech companies have since broken ties with the Chinese company. Huawei and the Office of Management and Budget didn’t immediately reply to requests for comment.Originally published June 10.Update, June 10: Adds quote. June 11: Adds Schumer quote. Comments Share your voice Huawei might get a short reprieve by the US government.  Angela Lang/CNET President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act in August 2018, banning government use of Huawei tech. But at least one government official says federal contractors aren’t ready to ditch the Chinese company. Russel T. Vought, the acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, requested a two-year reprieve for Huawei, according to The Wall Street Journal. Vought reportedly sent a letter dated June 4 to Vice President Mike Pence and nine members of Congress saying the ban would cause a “dramatic reduction” in companies that supply the government. It’d also affect companies in rural areas that receive federal grants and loans, and who use more Huawei technology, according to the Journal.Vought reportedly requested a span of four years, rather than two, from the passage of the NDAA before the Chinese company tech is barred from US government usage. A spokesperson for the office told the Journal that this request wouldn’t go against the policy of Huawei no longer being allowed to do business in the US. “This is about ensuring that companies who do business with the US government or receive federal grants and loans have time to extricate themselves from doing business with Huawei and other Chinese tech companies listed in the NDAA,” an OMB spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, raised concerns over Vought’s request Tuesday.”There is simply no reason, in my mind, for such a lengthy delay,” Schumer said. “It would only extend a window of opportunity for what is already a dire threat to our national security.” Huawei What is going on between Huawei and the US? England vs Pakistan T20I Live stream preview squads and expected XI

first_imgEoin Morgan will have to show great leadershipReutersPakistan’s long English summer kicks-off on May 5 with the only T20I against England that will be followed by a 5-match bilateral ODI series. Though this match belongs to a different format, it would still be seen, in many ways, as a preparatory contest for the upcoming ICC 2019 World Cup.Where and when to watch on TV, onlineThe standalone T20I featuring hosts England taking on Pakistan would begin at 2:30 pm local time and 7 pm IST.The live coverage of the match would be provided by Sony Six and Sony Six HD on TV while Sony LIV would be the platform for online streaming.PreviewSince the focus of both the countries is on the upcoming World Cup, this match would also be used to assess the abilities of various players from the perspective of that event. Even if it belongs to a different format, there is enough similarity between ODIs and T20 cricket to allow for a proper examination of a player’s suitability in one by looking at his performance in the other. For England, this match is likely to feature the T20I debut of Jofra Archer. There is a legion of English supporters who want this Barbados-born player to be part of the English World Cup team. His ODI debut against England didn’t necessarily provide a clinching argument but did feature a perfect yorker through which he got his maiden international wicket. If he delivers a good performance here and is capable of producing the kind of accurate bowling that has made him a superstar, then his chances of being in the eventual England World Cup team, despite not being named in the provisional squad would increase. Of course, even then, he would have to prove himself in the ODI series against Pakistan.Another man trying to find his way into the World Cup is Mohammad Amir. His poor form in ODI cricket meant that the selectors ignored him for the mega event. But by keeping him in the squad for both the T20I and ODIs, they have given him another opportunity. Will he make use of it?Squads:England: Eoin Morgan (C), James Vince, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Joe Denly, Ben Duckett, Dawid Malan, Ben Foakes (wk), Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Tom Curran, Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Mark WoodPakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmad (C/wk), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Hafeez, Yasir Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hasnain, Haris Sohail, Faheem Ashraf, Asif Ali, Abid AliFor visitors, this match would be a good opportunity to test their hard-hitting abilities. One of the problems plaguing the team has been the lack of power hitters in the lower order. If conditions are good, they can test if they have the tools to go on an all-out attack. It would also be a comeback of sorts for Sarfraz Ahmed. Having been rested for Pakistan’s last ODI series – against Australia where they got whitewashed by the Kangaroos – he had to watch his replacement Mohammed Rizwan score two hundreds. Most people expected Rizwan to be in the World Cup team but selectors preferred the experience of Sarfraz. Needless to say, there is going to be a lot of pressure on him. Jofra Archer is likely to make his T20I debutIANSIf clouds come around, as is often the case in England, then the match would provide a great opportunity for both teams to test their line-ups in testing conditions. While Pakistan’s batting line-up, obviously, hasn’t had too much exposure to overcast conditions, England too, have seemed vulnerable when the conditions are providing some help.James Vince is likely to open for England with Jason Roy. With Alex Hales out of the team and Sam Billings also injured, there will be an opening in the final World Cup squad that England choose. Vince has a golden opportunity to seal that spot. He will, though, have a stern test as the Pakistan bowlers may exploit his weakness to go for loose drives outside the off-stump.Another key man to watch out for would be Yasir Shah. With Shadab Khan injured, he is the lone frontline spinner in the squad and is yet to come up with a ground-breaking performance in limited-overs cricket. Against a power-packed England line-up in a T20 scenario, he would have a good test.Predicted XIsEngland: James Vince, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (C), Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes (wk), Adil Rashid, Tom Curran, Mark Wood, Jofra ArcherPakistan: Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Sarfaraz Ahmad, Hasan Ali, Yasir Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad AmirGlobal TV Listings:India: Sony SixPakistan: Ten Sports/PTV SportsUK: Sky CricketUSA: Willow TVCanada: Asian Television NetworkSouth Africa: SuperSportBangladesh: Gazi TVAustralia: Fox Sportslast_img read more
