Tom Cruise to Film The Mummy Remake in Morocco

By Bryn MillerRabat – Tom Cruise will return to Morocco this month to film a remake of The Mummy in the same region where the original was shot. This film is a remake of the 1999 film The Mummy, which in turn was loosely based on a 1932 film with the same title starring Boris Karloff. The 1999 movie was an action-adventure horror film written and directed by Stephen Sommers. The plot follows a group of treasure hunters in the Sahara that accidentally awakens a vengeful mummy. The 1999 film grossed $416 million; its success led Sommers to direct two sequels and one prequel. Parts of the movie were filmed at Ait Benhaddou, Morocco. The newest remake will be filmed in Ouarzazate, Errachidia, Erfoud, and Merzouga from June 20 to July 7. Often termed the “Hollywood of Africa”, this region has been featured in various blockbuster films, including Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Cruise also filmed the 2015 Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in Morocco.Various stars will join Cruise in the remake, including Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Sofia Boutella. The movie will be released on June 9, 2017. read more

Terrorism in Morocco A Drastic Approach Needed Now

Rabat – Morocco has invested significant efforts in both the security and religious fields in order to build its reputation as a peaceful, welcoming, and tolerant country in the otherwise turbulent region of North Africa and the Middle East. Those efforts were consistent and serious, leading ultimately to very positive effects worldwide.According to the Global Peace Index 2018, Morocco ranks among the most peaceful countries in the region, together with Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. However, the atrocious act of terror perpetrated a few days ago against two female Scandinavian tourists in the High Atlas Mountains was an unexpected shock that profoundly shook Moroccan and international public opinion.Read Also: Terrorism: Morocco Safer Than Algeria, US, FranceWhat makes this heinous crime so serious is the way in which it was committed. All terrorist attacks that have hit Morocco in the last two decades were either bombings or suicidal attacks targeting public places, such as hotels and restaurants. The recent brutal murder of the two Scandinavian tourists holds the mark of ISIS and reminds us of the grisly ISIS methods of killing and slaughtering in Syria, Iraq, and Libya. The proactive measures taken by Morocco’s intelligence and security services have made the country impenetrable ever since the inception of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or so it seemed. Does this crime indicate that Morocco has finally been penetrated? Is this terrorist act an indication of more terrorist activity taking place in our country in the coming days? Were the security and religious approaches implemented by the government to fight religious extremism really enough? What measures can be taken next to spare the country from other harsh incidents? The above questions are pressing and should be thoroughly contemplated and addressed before any strategic move in the fight against religious extremism is made in the future. The religious and security approaches that Morocco has relied upon so far were very instrumental and should not be underestimated or belittled.Read Also: BCIJ Arrests 9 More Suspects in Scandinavian Tourist MurdersThe strategic national policy initiated by King Mohammed VI in the aftermath of the 2003 Casablanca attacks to monitor and manage the religious field through the control of mosques, the training of moderate religious scholars and preachers, and the control of fatwas by appointing the Supreme Scientific Council were all very successful. Moroccan intelligence and security services have also managed, since 2002, to dismantle more than 183 terrorist cells across the country, according to the Central Bureau of Judiciary Investigations (BCIJ).The recent murder of two Scandinavian tourists, however, has raised concerns about Morocco’s counterterrorism approach, which had previously inspired many countries at the regional and international levels. The dismantling of dozens of terrorist cells every year should have been seen as an indicator of the strong existence of the terrorist ideology in Morocco. The successful and decisive intervention of Morocco’s intelligence services before those terrorist cells could translate their ideology into brutality and bloodshed does not change the fact that the mechanisms by which that ideology works and spreads are still operating. Therefore, terrorists and religious extremists could even be around us anywhere on any day, in private and public places, waiting for the right time and the right place to put their radical beliefs into action.  The claim made by one of the arrested suspects in a video declaring his allegiance to ISIS prior to the murder of the Scandinavian tourists should be taken seriously. He said, addressing the leader of ISIS Abu-Bakar Al-Baghdadi: “You should know that only God knows of the exact number of the followers you have in Morocco.”  How can we track down and prevent those followers? What about those who firmly hold the ideology but do not belong to organized terrorist cells? We need to understand that religious extremism is an ideology and the fight against it should be at the intellectual and educational levels first and foremost. Morocco, despite the efforts that have been made, was remarkably lenient with the discourses of hate, intolerance, and bigotry which surface in schools, the media, and public spaces.Read Also: Official: Scandinavian Tourists’ Murder Wasn’t a Coordinated ISIS AttackWe have repeatedly seen videos circulating on social media by prominent Wahhabi leaders in Morocco demonizing and threatening intellectuals such as Ahmed Assid, Rachid Aylal, and others by accusing them of heresy. Somehow, those people were never arrested or tried. Perhaps the pressures by Islamic forces (Islamic parties, Islamic groups, conservative civil society, etc.) in the country put the state in a difficult and complicated position. Those conservative forces have always fiercely objected to reforms interpreting them as secular and anti-Islam, starting from the Modawana (family code) in 2003 to the Islamic education school curriculum reform in 2018.The recent terrorist attack near the tranquil and peaceful village of Imlil in the High Atlas Mountains awakens us to the bitter truth that terrorism is a constantly looming threat for Morocco. Thus, a more drastic and comprehensive approach should be implemented with zero tolerance to bigots, extremists, and the advocates of hate and terror in the name of religion.Morocco should address the conditions conducive to the emergence and spread of terrorism by fighting poverty and social disparity in the country. Moreover, strengthening the educational system and building students’ cultural awareness, promoting the culture of peace and coexistence through educational programs and curricula, ensuring humans rights and the rule of law, and promoting the universal values of peace, justice, co-existence, integrity, love, and cross-cultural dialogue would be a few steps in the right direction.May the souls of Louisa Vesterager Jespersen and Maren Ueland rest in peace, and may peace, love, and prosperity prevail in the world. read more

Oil price rises above 88 following sharp drops ends week slightly higher

by The Associated Press Posted Apr 19, 2013 7:45 am MDT The price of oil rose above US$88 a barrel on Friday as traders cautiously returned to commodity markets following sharp sell-offs this week.Benchmark crude for May delivery rose 28 cents to finish at $88.01 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Crude has lost about $9 a barrel since the beginning of the month, as various reports highlighted slower growth in China and still-sluggish growth in the U.S. and elsewhere, while oil supplies remained high.At the same time investors sold off gold, silver and other commodities, and looked to the stock market for better returns. The stock market had a volatile week as many of those investors bought and sold shares, looking to consolidate their positions.Analysts said relatively low prices for oil and a weaker U.S. dollar rekindled interest among buyers.“Crude oil prices rebounded and climbed higher on Friday … supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and a strong rebound in the global equity markets and increased risk appetite,” said a note from Sucden Financial Research in London. A weaker dollar makes crude cheaper — and a more attractive investment — for traders using other currencies.Prices were also supported by the possibility that oil-producing countries could reduce output. Some of the members of OPEC — which includes some the world’s leading oil exporters like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Venezuela and Nigeria — have said that $100 a barrel is a “reasonable” price for both producers and consumers. In London Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refiners, rose 52 cents to end at $99.65 on the ICE Futures exchange.“If the oil price were to fall further, this would step up the pressure on OPEC to take action,” said a report from analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. “At present, OPEC is producing (around) 800,000 barrels per day more crude oil than is needed given the growing shale oil production in the U.S. and the weaker than expected global oil demand.”In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:— Gasoline rose two cents to finish at $2.77 per gallon.— Heating oil added one cent to end at $2.79 a gallon.— Natural gas rose one cent to finish at $4.41 per 1,000 cubic feet.___Pamela Sampson in Bangkok and Pablo Gorondi in Budapest contributed to this report.(TSX:ECA, TSX:IMO, TSX:SU, TSX:HSE, NYSE:BP, NYSE:COP, NYSE:XOM, NYSE:CVX, TSX:CNQ, TSX:TLM, TSX:COS.UN, TSX:CVE) AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Oil price rises above $88 following sharp drops, ends week slightly higher read more

UN General Assembly approves global arms trade treaty

The resolution containing the text of the treaty, which regulates the international trade in conventional arms, received 154 votes in favour. Three Member States – Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Iran and Syria – voted against the decision, while 23 countries abstained. Today’s action follows the failure last Thursday of the Final UN Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) to reach an agreement among all 193 Member States on a treaty text at the conclusion of its two-week session. The adoption of the treaty was welcomed by several UN officials, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who hailed it as a powerful new tool in efforts to prevent grave human rights abuses, and added that it will provide much-needed momentum for other global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts. “It is a historic diplomatic achievement – the culmination of long-held dreams and many years of effort,” he said in a statement issued after the Assembly’s action. “This is a victory for the world’s people.”The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) welcomed the treaty’s adoption as a crucial step toward protecting children, as it will regulate the transfer of weapons from one country to another. “The Arms Trade Treaty asks States to explicitly consider the risk that an arms transfer could facilitate serious acts of violence against women and children before allowing it to proceed,” Susan Bissell, UNICEF’s Chief of Child Protection, noted in a news release. “This is critical given that weapons are now one of the leading causes of death of children and adolescents in many countries, including many that are not experiencing war,” she added. The UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng, welcomed the inclusion in the treaty of a prohibition on the transfer of arms which would be used in the commission of genocide, crimes against humanity and certain war crimes and called on States to act quickly to apply this prohibition, pending its entry into force. “Genocide depends in part on the availability of arms and ammunition,” he said in a statement. “Despite some shortcomings of this treaty, its adoption represents an important step forward in the struggle to prevent genocide and provides a new legal tool to protect those at risk of their lives, and groups threatened with destruction.” Speaking ahead of the vote, the President of the General Assembly, Vuk Jeremiæ, called the text “groundbreaking,” as well as “robust and actionable.”He recalled that in 2006, Member States had pledged in the same General Assembly Hall to engage in a multilateral effort to produce a legally binding instrument, establishing common standards for the import, export and transfer of conventional arms – including warships and battle tanks, combat aircraft and attack helicopters, as well as small arms and light weapons. “I personally believe that the final text of this conference meets those commitments to a great extent,” Mr. Jeremiæ said, adding that the lack of a regulatory framework for such activities had made a “daunting” contribution to ongoing conflicts, regional instabilities, displacement of peoples, terrorism and transnational organized crime. The text draws a link with the presence of weapons across the developing world, especially in conflict-affected areas, with the challenge of sustainable development and safeguarding human rights, added Mr. Jeremiæ.The President of the ATT conference, Ambassador Peter Woolcott of Australia, noted that the conference “came very close to success.” He praised all delegations for “working hard and negotiating in a constructive manner and looking for success,” adding that the different interests and perspectives in the conference room required work through complex issues. Each version of the text built on previous ones, Mr. Woolcott said, and represented “a fair expression of negotiation, compromise between many different interests in the room, and ultimately what might command consensus at the end of the final conference.”Once the text was rejected Thursday evening, a Member State introduced a General Assembly draft resolution that same evening, according to the Office of the President of the Assembly.Unlike in the Conference, where all 193 Member States had to agree on the final text, the Assembly needed only a simple majority, or 97 votes, to pass the text. The treaty will enter into force 90 days after ratified by the 50th signatory. The treaty regulates all conventional arms within the following categories: battle tanks, armoured combat vehicles, large-calibre artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile launchers, and small arms and light weapons.According to the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, the treaty will not do any of the following: interfere with domestic arms commerce or the right to bear arms in Member States; ban the export of any type of weapon; harm States’ legitimate right to self-defence; or undermine national arms regulation standards already in place. read more

MineSight tool addresses wastedump challenge

first_imgHexagon Mining today releases an improved version of its mine scheduling tool, which addresses the challenge of sequencing and modeling waste dumps with multiple access roads.MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is used by hundreds of mines worldwide to determine the most productive cut mining sequence to achieve the highest project profitability. MSSO Version 11, released today, features a Multi-Entry tool, which responds to customers‘ haulage needs for open pit truck and shovel operations. The workaround usually employed to tackle the challenge of sequencing and modeling waste dumps with multiple access roads is to split the dump destination into multiple dumps. If a waste dump (e.g. Dump1) has two entrances, then MSSO users typically split it into two dumps – one for each road. This creates more destinations than needed in the schedule.Version 11 changes this by allowing mine engineers to plan for haulage access to dumps via multiple entrances or ramps based on the mining location and available dumping points. If you are trying to determine the best routing destination for your material while accounting for sequencing destinations with multiple entries, then MSSO Version 11 is the answer.“The value to our customers is that low confidence in sequencing has a direct impact on time and cost, and MSSO 11 improves the haulage component significantly,“ said Carl Brackpool, Product Manager.“This improvement not only addresses concerns with highly manual calculations, but it also represents the first in a series of features around a world-class haulage function that will include monitoring for road congestion in real-time, the next phase of MSSO and Multi-Entry for 2018.”last_img read more

UPDATE Meth bust among largest in county history

first_imgThe Clark-Vancouver Regional Drug Task Force seized 74 pounds of crystal meth in a series of raids earlier this week. In 2011, the then Clark-Skamania Drug Task Force seized more than 16 pounds of meth following the search of several Vancouver locations, including downtown restaurant-nightclub El Parral. In 2008, a Vancouver police Neighborhood Response Team seized 18 pounds of meth while investigating a forgery case in La Center.Police announced Wednesday that they made a $1 million methamphetamine bust earlier this week, the largest single meth seizure in county history. After serving a series of search warrants Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, the Clark-Vancouver Regional Drug Task Force recovered 74 pounds of crystal methamphetamine from an apartment at 11304 S.E. 10th St. in Cascade Park, Cmdr. Mike Cooke said Wednesday morning. The apartment was allegedly used as a safe house for drug traffickers, police said. The value of the meth is estimated to be about $932,400 based on a street price of $12,600 per pound, the sheriff’s office said. That’s the bulk price, said Sgt. Shane Gardner, a sheriff’s office spokesman. If sold on the street, where a typical person will use an amount the size of a sugar packet, it could be worth more, he said.Santos Camacho-Cardenas, 23, of Vancouver was arrested at the apartment on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine. He is in the Clark County Jail on $250,000 bail with an immigrations hold, the sheriff’s office said.Amy Hill, Al Angelo Company community supervisor, said her company was caught off guard by the drug activity at the Cascades Apartments. Security personnel hired by the apartments didn’t notice suspicious activity and management didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary during an inspection about a month ago.last_img read more

Is Bigg Boss Tamil voting rigged Excontestant raises suspicion over transparency in

first_imgKamal Haasan and Daniel Anne Pope.PR HandoutTime and again, people have been raising doubts over the credibility of the voting process in reality shows. There have been accusations against TV channels of rigging votes to ensure the victorious of the contestants who garner TRP to the channel at the cost of deserving candidates. Even the Bigg Boss format is not an exception.Daniel Anne Pope aka Danny, one of the contestants in Bigg Boss Tamil 2, has echoed the same views by raising suspicion over the voting process. In an interview, he has claimed that the doubts over its transparency arose after Sendrayan’s eviction in the previous season.Danny said that he did not have doubts over his eviction because a section of people was not happy with him. “But in case of Sendrayan, he was being loved by all. My wife had shown me three unofficial sites which conducted the polls indicating that he would be safe and the result took me by surprise,” he added. He jokingly wonders whether people failed to press the right button. “Audience might have mistaken my picture to Sendrayan and did not to cast their votes in the Hot Star app,” he thinks.”They say it is a foolproof system and I feel there should be transparency over the process,” he ends with the remark that he might receive a legal notice from the makers of Kamal Haasan-hosted show for raising questions over the voting process. The audience registered their doubts on social media sites after the eviction of Fathiba Babu last weekend on Bigg Boss Tamil 3.It may be recalled that a couple of contestants had earlier accused the reality shows of rigging votes. Rahul Bhatt, who had participated in Bigg Boss Hindi 4, had called it to be a “scripted show” and indicated that the evictions were not done through public voting.”I was boring and didn’t provide entertainment for the viewers. I can’t provide entertainment to viewers at the cost of making a fool of myself. I cannot be what I am not. I am not a monkey like the others. Why would the channel keep me on the show when there was neither a controversy nor a romance linked to me?I thought I would stay a couple of weeks longer. But when somebody like Seema Parihar has been saved after being nominated thrice and Sara Khan re-entered after being taken out, I realised that it was all being scripted and manufactured to generate TRPs. The evictions are not happening through public voting. I have no complaints because my eviction is justified. I am glad that I have come out of the fake world (of Bigg Boss) into the real world,” he told Rediff.last_img read more

Nanostructures enhance light trapping for solar fuel generation

first_img Wormlike hematite photoanode breaks the world-record for solar hydrogen production efficiency Illustration of a hematite photoelectrode consisting of a periodic nanobeam-array (red) on a conductive ITO layer (dark blue). The nanobeam structure boosts the absorption of sunlight at the hematite/H2O interface, resulting in more efficient conversion of sunlight into solar fuel. Credit: Soo Jin Kim, et al. ©2014 American Chemical Society (Phys.org) —As the world’s dependence on fossil fuels causes ever-increasing problems, researchers are investigating solar fuels as an alternative energy source. To make solar fuels, sunlight is converted into hydrogen or another type of chemical energy. Compared to energy produced by solar cells, which convert sunlight directly to electricity, solar fuels such as hydrogen have the advantage of being easier to store for later use. Because of the enormous amount of sunlight that reaches Earth, solar fuel generation has the potential to serve as a clean, terawatt-scale global energy source. But in order for this to happen, the photocatalysts that enhance light absorption and light trapping must be improved, both in terms of higher performance and lower cost. In a new study, researchers Soo Jin Kim, et al., at the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials in Stanford, California, have demonstrated that photocatalysts made from iron oxide exhibit substantial performance improvements when they are patterned with nanostructures. Their paper is published in a recent issue of Nano Letters.”I think the most significant advance is that the work will provide valuable guidelines for the design of new, nanostructured photocatalyst materials capable of effectively absorbing light and driving catalytic reactions,” Professor Mark L. Brongersma at Stanford told Phys.org. “Hopefully, it will stimulate more research on photon management for photocatalyst materials. The use of photon managements in solar fuel generation is lagging behind strongly with respect to development of photon management strategies for solar cells.”As the researchers explain, iron oxide in the hematite phase (Fe2O3) is an earth-abundant semiconductor with a bandgap energy of 590 nm, which is considered close to optimal for water splitting and hydrogen production. Because it absorbs photons across a relatively large portion of the solar spectrum, it outperforms other catalyst materials that absorb smaller portions of the solar spectrum. Despite these advantages, hematite has a weakness: it cannot absorb photons near its surface, which results in many of the photoexcited carriers recombining rather than participating in chemical reactions to produce hydrogen. This problem occurs due to a mismatch between hematite’s very short (nanometer scale) carrier diffusion length compared to the absorption depth of light (micrometer scale near the surface). So even though the photons are present, they cannot be effectively used.Previous research has attempted to address this problem by adding metal nanostructures to enhance light absorption in the near-surface region of the photocatalysts. However, this approach suffers from intrinsic optical losses in the metal. In the current study, the researchers have circumvented this problem of optical loss by nanopatterning the hematite photocatalysts themselves. The nanostructures allow the photocatalyst to overcome the detrimental mismatch between the carrier diffusion and photonic absorption length scales, and redistribute the photons to the near-surface region. Nanostructuring’s benefits come from the fact that it allows sunlight to drive optical resonances in the hematite, resulting in an enhancement of both light absorption and light scattering. By engineering the size, shape, spacing, and dielectric environment of the nanostructures, the researchers could optimize and tune the resonant wavelengths across the solar spectrum. This strategy of nanostructuring a photocatalyst could be extended to other photocatalyst materials. As nanopatterning techniques continue to become used more often in many different areas, it is likely that nanostructured arrays can be made inexpensively over large areas.”Next, we are going to employ metamaterials concepts in our photocatalyst materials,” Brongersma said. “We will see where it takes us!” Journal information: Nano Letters Explore furthercenter_img This document is subject to copyright. State keen to come up with green towns not just buildings

first_imgKolkata: The Bengal government is planning to develop energy efficient towns where buildings would be constructed following certain parameters imposed by the state government thereby reducing the overall consumption of electricity. This comes at a time when the Centre is trying to introduce Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for constructing residential buildings in all the states where the real estate developers will have to keep in mind certain parameters while setting up both commercial and residential buildings. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe Mamata Banerjee government may not implement the ECBC code as proposed by the Centre because it is only meant for the buildings whereas the Bengal government is giving emphasis on the development of an entire green town. It may modify the code to suit the regional needs. It may be mentioned here that the Centre is in the process of preparing ECBC for residential buildings. In case of commercial buildings, the Union Power ministry had already framed certain rules on how the buildings would be constructed keeping in mind the environmental issues. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedState Power minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay said instead of constructing a particular energy efficient building, the state government is focusing on the development of an entire town in such a manner so that consumption of electricity is minimal.”Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is keener on developing towns in such a manner so that they are more energy efficient. The Centre is bringing a new policy where a building will be constructed on the basis of certain parameters. But our government is working on the prospect of creating greener cities. Constructing a particular building by following energy efficient building code will hardly contribute to make a city green. Our Chief Minister is interested in developing an entire green city in the true sense of the term,” Chattopadhyay said. The Bengal government has already undertaken a two pronged approach to cater to the energy demands of its citizens and also ensured the emission of harmful gasses is low in the state. The Mamata Banerjee government is promoting greater use of renewable energy in the state mainly through solar use. Efforts are being made by the state Power department to efficiently use the renewable energy through various innovative policies.”Our government will work towards the development of energy efficient towns instead of constructing a building by implementing the ECBC. A town will be constructed in such a manner where the buildings will not only be eco friendly but other environmental aspects will be kept in mind,” Chattopadhyay said.It was learnt that many other states are yet to decide whether they would implement the ECBC code framed by the Centre while allowing the construction of residential buildings.last_img read more

These projects will get total funding of $9,000, which means $3,000 per month. What is Clojurists Together? Clojurists Together was formed back in 2017 and is run by a board of developers in the Clojure Community. It focuses on keeping the development of open source Clojure software sustainable by raising funds and providing support for infrastructure and documentation. Additionally, it also supports other community initiatives like the Google Summer of Code. The way it works is that open source developers apply for funding, and if the board members think that the project meets the requirements of the Clojurists Together members, their project is selected for funding. Then the developers get paid to work on their project for three months. The funds are raised with the help of Clojure companies and individual developers who can sign up for a monthly contribution or do a one-time donation. This is their fifth funding cycle and previously they have supported datascript, kaocha, cljdoc, Shadow CLJS, clj-http, Figwheel, ClojureScript, and CIDER. Details of the projects funded Neanderthal Neanderthal is a Clojure library for faster matrix and linear algebra computations. It is based on native libraries of BLAS and LAPACK computation routines for both CPU and GPU. On GPU, this library is almost 3000x faster than optimized Clojure/ Java libraries and on CPU it is 100x faster than optimized pure Java. This project is being developed by Dragan Djuric, who works on the Uncomplicate suite of libraries and is also the professor of Software Engineering at the University of Belgrade. Within the span of these three months, Djuric plans to work on some of the following updates: Writing an introductory series named Deep Learning from the ground up with Clojure. Integrating Nvidia’s cuSolver into Neanderthal’s CUDA GPU engine to provide some key LAPACK functions that are only available on the CPU. Along with these developments, he will also be improving the documentation and tutorials for Neanderthal. Aleph Aleph is a Clojure library for client and server network programming. Based on Netty, it is said to be one of the best options for building high-performance communication systems in Clojure. Oleksii Kachaiev, who is working on Aleph, has planned the following additions for Aleph in the allocated 3 months: Releasing a new version of Aleph with the latest developments Updating internals of the library and interactions with Netty to ease the operational burden and improve performance Implementing missing parts of the websocket protocol To know how far these projects have come, check out this monthly update for February shared by Clojurists Together yesterday. first_img Comments   Share   For the first time in a calendar year, the Arizona Cardinals are above the .500 mark. The Cardinals got another dominant performance from their defense in a 22-6 win over the Carolina Panthers at University of Phoenix Stadium Sunday. Here are six things that stood out to me from Sunday’s Cardinals’ victory.1Welcome back, D-Wash – Last Monday, general manager Steve Keim told Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 620 that he was going to greet inside linebacker Daryl Washington at the front door of the team’s Tempe training facility with big hug. Washington had missed the Cardinals’ first four games due to a suspension for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. The suspension is now over, and Washington certainly came to play in his 2013 debut with two sacks, nine tackles and an interception. The Cardinals missed Washington’s athleticism in pass coverage in the season’s first four weeks, but he did so much more than that in his return to the lineup. 4Too many picks – It wasn’t all sunshine and candy Sunday for the Cardinals. Thanks to the defensive effort, the team was able to win despite three interceptions from quarterback Carson Palmer. The veteran, who has had a a penchant for turnovers during his career, has been intercepted seven times in the last three games and nine times overall — which projects out to almost 29 picks over the course of a 16-game schedule. The Cardinals will struggle to score in games where they don’t turn the ball over this season — so the picks need to stop.5The kicking game – Man, Dave Zastudil is a good punter. The left-footer from Ohio U. averaged just under 50 yards per punt Sunday, planted half of his kicks inside the Panthers’ 20-yard line and had a ridiculous net average of 48.3 yards. It was his highest net average in a single game since Week 2 of the 2008 season when he was with Cleveland (52.8 yards). And after being in the doghouse for much of the preseason, Jay Feely has acquitted himself rather nicely in the last few games. The veteran was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts Sunday, including a 50-yarder with 3:38 to go that made it a two-possession game. For the season, Feely is 7-for-8 on field goal attempts, so maybe that challenge from Arians in the preseason worked. 6It’s not 1985 – The Wave? Seriously? I had to check my calendar to make sure I hadn’t been transported back in time via DeLorean when Cardinals fans started doing the Wave in the second half. Did the people who started Sunday’s version leave the game and then see how many people they could fit into a phone booth? Or did they just retire to the homestead to eat live goldfish? The Wave is obviously outdated, but it’s even worse to do it WHEN YOUR TEAM IS OFFENSE! Fan behavior 101: When your team is on defense, unleash hell. When your team is offense, shut up until something good happens. Capische? – / 32 The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and sellingcenter_img Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Top Stories 2Who’s it gonna be? – Cards’ cornerback Patrick Peterson was last week’s NFC Defensive Player of Week 4 after a two-interception game against Tampa Bay. There’s a really good chance that particular award stays in Arizona for a second straight week. Washington, Calais Campbell and Karlos Dansby will get consideration for the hardware after solid games. Campbell had two sacks, one of which happened in the end zone for a safety, and he forced a fourth-quarter fumble that led to the Cardinals’ last touchdown. Dansby had, you guessed it, two sacks, an interception and a pass breakup.3More Ellington, please – Rookie sixth-round pick Andre Ellington has proven to be one of the shrewdest late-round picks in the National Football League to this point. Ellington had 52 yards on just seven carries and caught four passes for 31 yards Sunday. His workload grows a little each week, you would think that by the midway point of the season, he’ll be getting more touches on offense than starter Rashard Mendenhall. I’m all for it. Ellington has a rare burst that Cardinals fans haven’t seen from the running back spot since, well, let’s just say it’s been a long time.
