DIASPORA WILL BE ACCOMMODATED The Jamaica Amateur Body Building and Fitness Association (JABBFA) is hoping to send between 16 and 20 athletes to this year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Bodybuilding Championships in Mexico City, Mexico, from September 28 to October 1. The association is looking to build on the success of the squad that went to the 44th staging of the CAC Championships last year. However, JABBFA President Audrey Allwood said that although the Sports Development Foundation has been very helpful, more funds are still needed, and she is appealing to corporate Jamaica to help the team with sponsorship of its athletes. “What we’re doing now is asking if the athletes can get assistance from anyone out there, because we need to take a team this year,” she said. “We are doing very well. Last year, we took 12 athletes and came back with 13 medals. That is fantastic for a little island like us, and we’re talking about 42 countries, and we did really well. We’re always on top, always there. The athletes are looking far better this year and the athletes and we know we can do well so we need just that little extra help from corporate Jamaica.” JABBFA Vice-president Kirk Frankson said that this year’s team will incorporate not just local athletes, but also those from the diaspora looking to represent their homeland. “This year’s team actually includes persons who are living in Jamaica and the diaspora,” he said. “We actually have two persons who are living in other Caribbean countries and one person in the United States who is actually competing for Jamaica. “We are currently having a problem gaining sponsorship for the team. The overall cost for each athlete runs between $150,000 and $200,000 to go to Mexico. ” Frankson also revealed that Jamaica will be bidding to host the 47th staging of the tournament in 2019. “Jamaica has not hosted the CAC Championships in more than 12 years, and we are currently putting in a bid to host it in 2019,” he said. “This is one of our major priorities to ensure that our athletes get an opportunity to become professionals.”
But the 33-year-old centre did not feature in last weekend’s 69-31 rout of Japan in Tokyo.“Sonny’s had the least rugby, he’s still finding his top form; I think that’s fair to say,” New Zealand assistant coach Ian Foster said Wednesday.“I don’t think our patience (with Williams) will be driven by his background, more based on how we see players perform in training.“I think when we look at the physical nature of the game, how they are training, sometimes things are going really good off the park and it hasn’t quite gelled to the extent they want on the park.“Sometimes players are deemed to have had a quiet game, but in reality they may not have had too many opportunities to show what they are good at,” Foster added.New Zealand will take on Ireland in Dublin on November 18, and conclude their tour of the northern hemisphere with a trip to Rome to face Italy on November 25.“We’ve got a whole lot of players who have had injuries this year, significant injuries over time, and they’ve come back and at various degrees of accuracy in their game,” said Foster.“But also some of them have taken a little longer to get their feet right.“All our midfielders right now are actually jumping out of their skin, to be honest.“In the last two weeks, the energy levels and work rate is as good as it’s been all year in that group.”England will hope to unleash a powerhouse centre of their own on Saturday if Manu Tuilagi is able to make his long-awaited Test comeback. The Leicester midfielder, whose career has been blighted by injuries, had been due to make his first England appearance in more than two years during last Saturday’s 12-11 win over South Africa at Twickenham before a minor groin strain ruled him out of a place on the bench.Tuilagi’s arguably best match in an England shirt came during his try-scoring display in a 38-21 win over New Zealand at Twickenham in 2012.Leicester team-mate Ben Youngs, the England scrum-half, is eager for more of the same this weekend.“I was gutted when he pulled out (of the South Africa match), but it was a tiny niggle,” said Youngs.“But with someone like him, it was not worth risking.“It’s great to see him running around in training. I’m really please he’s able to get back out there. He’s looking good.“We know what a world-class operator Manu is. Erik Lamela is back fit after a year out injured 1 Erik Lamela has told Mauricio Pochettino he is finally ready to make his Tottenham return after more than a year out through injury.Lamela, who joined Spurs four years ago for a then club record £30million, has undergone operations on each of his hips and not played since October 25, 2016.But after beginning training early last month, Lamela gave Pochettino the green light on Monday and is now expected to be on the bench for Tuesday’s game against Leicester.“It is very good news because he is in contention for tomorrow,” Pochettino said.“It’s because after the training today he felt good and said, ‘Ok I am ready to move on and be available if you want’.”Lamela’s recovery has proven complex, with the 25-year-old even allowed to take treatment from his former club Roma in January. There was also a traumatic period in December last year when Lamela rushed back to his native Argentina to attend to his brother, who had been unexpectedly taken into hospital.Pochettino is likely to ease Lamela back in slowly over the Christmas period but he insists he never had any doubts that he would play again.“No, never doubts. We trusted in our medical staff and him that he’s a very competitive player, always focused on his recovery,” Pochettino said.“It’s true that after a year it’s difficult for a player to be fit and find the feelings in the competition when it’s an injury for long term. Always it’s not easy and the expectations need to be low.“Maybe similar to Danny Rose, after 10 months or year it’s similar. You need to provide them the time to be fit and feel again the competition.“With Lamela there’s no pressure on him, only to feel he’s a player in the competition again.”Tottenham’s title challenge has been derailed by a disappointing run that has included only one win in their last four Premier League matches. They now sit 13 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City but Pochettino called for perspective.“I think if you remember everything that happened three years ago, no-one would believe we would be talking about finishing first, beating Dortmund and Real Madrid and finishing first in the Champions League and have the capacity in the last three seasons to fight for the top four and the Premier League,” Pochettino said.“We were talking about in the next three or four seasons arriving to the new stadium and trying to reduce the gap to the top four, and now we are involved in the battle for the best competitions in the world.”Harry Winks has fallen ill and will have to be assessed ahead of the trip to the King Power Stadium while Victor Wanyama (knee) and Toby Alderweireld (hamstring) are both out.
Guardiola’s side are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League Injuries to key players have prompted more debate on the merits of a packed festive programme, and a leading academic believes greater emphasis should now be placed on player safety.Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola labelled the congested schedule a “disaster” for players after losing striker Gabriel Jesus to a knee injury on Sunday.Guardiola even made a plea to the powers that be to take action over the Premier League’s fixture congestion after City’s 3-1 win over Watford on Tuesday night. West Brom complained to the Premier League after being asked to play twice in three days, having pleaded for a postponement with Tuesday’s game at West Ham coming just 51 hours after the New Year’s Eve visit of Arsenal.Leicester had only 213 hours between the start and finish of their four fixtures, and Federico Formenti – senior lecturer in human physiology at King’s College, London – reckons players should be given a minimum of 48 hours’ recovery time and greater consideration for their overall well-being.“I think priority of players’ safety should be taken over the amount of money they make from multiple games in a short period of time,” Formenti, a trustee of The Physiological Society, told Press Association Sport.“Perhaps it is the role of whoever is outside of the financial interests of this story to collect and analyse some statistical data on how frequently players can play without increasing the rate of injury compared with playing once a week – it is a relatively basic question which could be answered by looking at data from three or four seasons.“I don’t know the answer, but if there is a higher injury-rate with frequent games, then we should reconsider what the minimum recovery time is.“If you compare the same period in the season for different seasons, we would have an idea of the dangers of that time of year.”However, previous studies have shown that workload and fatigue are not the only factors in injuries.A 2004 report into injuries during FIFA tournaments and Olympic Games between 1998 to 2001 discovered an average 86 per cent of the injuries arose as a result of contact with another player and approximately half were caused by foul play.“This study highlighted that most of the injuries happened as a result of contact, like kicking or pushing,” Formenti added.“Apart from allowing at least 48 hours for recovery, other factors must be taken into account too when trying to reduce players’ injuries.” 1

Neymar’s mother has urged her Brazilian football star son to “forgive” the woman who accused him of rape and “return to Jesus,” in a message published Tuesday on Instagram. Nadine Goncalves’ plea, which featured a photo of herself with Neymar and his sister Rafaela, comes after lawyers for the accuser reportedly stopped representing her because of contradictions in her story. Neymar has vehemently denied the allegations and his father has claimed the Saint-Germain player was the victim of a blackmail attempt. “My son … now that the truth of God is coming out, it is time to learn from all this and return to Jesus Christ, your first love,” Goncalves wrote to Neymar, the world’s most expensive footballer. “Focus on what you love most in life, playing football,” she said, as Neymar prepares with his teammates for this month’s Copa America tournament in Brazil. “We are Christians, forgive that girl. Me and your sister, as women, can guarantee that she does not represent us.” Neymar posted a seven-minute video on Instagram on Saturday denying he had raped the woman after she accused him of sexually assaulting her at a Paris hotel in May. In the video, he showed what he said was a series of WhatsApp messages with the woman, including topless photographs of her in bed. Police in Rio said Sunday they had launched an investigation into the publication of intimate information on social media concerning the woman. In the latest twist in the high-profile case, the Sao Paulo-based firm representing the woman said they had dropped their client after she changed her story, Globo TV reported Monday. The lawyers said the woman initially told them she had had consensual sex with Neymar and that he then became violent and assaulted her. But the firm, Fernandes e Abreu, said that in the official complaint the woman gave to the Brazilian police, she “described what had happened as ‘rape’, which is a completely different allegation.” The scandal caps a troubled season for Neymar, on and off the field. It has ben marred by a recurring injury, two separate suspensions for insulting a referee and hitting a fan, and the loss of Brazil’s captaincy in the Copa. After the first reports of the rape allegation on Saturday, Neymar published a seven-minute Instagram video in which he denied any wrongdoing and showed messages and images he says were exchanged with his accuser. Images of the unidentified woman, some of them blurred because of sexual content, also appeared. With inputs from AFP Catch up on all the latest IPL News and updates here.
